Watching Rio growing up, as a Mexican-American kid with no representation, I felt so happy to hear people like me on tv. But as an adult, it's disappointing when Latinos are considered interchangeable with each other. Maybe being able to feel this way is a luxury afforded by the existence of Coco and Encanto. In 2011 we really were begging for scraps. But I hope one day we get a beautiful Brazilian movie that actually sounds and looks Brazilian, with a bilingual cast and all the budget of an assured English-language audience. Now that it's been done with LatAm Spanish, I know it can be done with Brazilian Portuguese 💚

Just to clarify so it doesn't come out as offensive or aggressive, but "Gringo" in Brazilian portuguese is not  a slur, It's literally just "Foreigner", to Brazilian even other latinos are gringos

One thing that kinda annoyed me was that Blu, which is a Spix Macaw (the movie called his species Blue Macaw, but this species doesn't exist and is heavily based on the Spix Macaw) was captured in a thriving tropical forest, probably the Atlantic Forest, while actual Spix's Macaws are found in the gallery forests (forests that grow beside a river) of the Caatinga, a semi-arid shrubland. They lost a great opportunity to show the many different biomes of Brazil. Instead, nope, just a random tropical forest which most foreigners will think it is the Amazon, most Brazilians will think it is the Atlantic forest, but in reality it is supposed to be neither.

I can't with the "que que é bãrdou?" remaining the same on both the original dub and the brazilian dub, it always makes me laugh a lot.

"Quando foi que esse passarinho aprendeu inglês? Fez cursinho no Fisk foi?" Kkkkkkkk

every time she starts speaking portuguese my brain does a 360°, it feels like i'm watching a different person suddenly and, wow i love being bilingual

Being half-latina, half-asian, I really feel what you're saying! People only know of the drugs and violence from my latam country, and only know of the "pop" music and certain marketable foods from my asian country. I am glad that at least one of my countries is seen in a good light, but it irks me to see movies quash it all down into the cardboard cutout stereotypes that gringos know and like :( We're so much more than that! I'm full of pride and mixed emotions of both of my countries, I just want to share my culture and history with my friends, but it's just... hard. It takes some work and curiosity to want to engage with media outside of your sphere, so it's a genuine miracle whenever someone actually agrees to listen and genuinely engages in that conversation.

As someone who's born and raised in Manaus, I didn't even remember we appeared in Rio 2 and honestly that just blew my mind cause what do you mean no one talks about that here???

"what, did it take lessons at fisk?" made laugh harder than I was expecting

"Did she take lessons in FISK?"
Adorei

14:38  As a fellow native Portuguese-speaker, I can't even begin to explain how much this annoys me lol.

Since the movie came out a month earlier in Brazil than the rest of the world, you can sort of, maybe consider the Brazilian Portuguese dub of Rio to be the original one, and the English release to simply be a dub.

11:35 In the Spanish dub, they did say "Benvindo".
Seems the dub respected Brazil a little bit more.

I never thought about the male main characters as brazilian, as a kid I thought he was from USA and recently move to Brazil

As a Brazilian, it's always a surprise to hear you speak Portuguese because it just proves that my English is pretty bad lol😂

Oh my god this is almost exactly how I feel about greek “representation” in American media. It was so nice to feel seen by one of my favorite creators, to know that I’m not alone in feeling misrepresented in American media. And no, this is not white fragility, Americans need to realize that American White is not the same as having fair skin. We have culture that is different and should be celebrated beyond what is widely accepted for “generalized audiences”, as should EVERY culture. International art and cinema is a beautiful thing, and Americans should open themselves up to it, celebrate it as we celebrate their own cinematic pieces.

As a Syrian-Palestinian, I TOTALLY get how you feel! This video made me appreciate the movie so much more! Here's hoping one day us Levantine Arabs get proper representation in western cinema. Oh, and we too eat chicken hearts. We call it 'lubat (the ' is meant as a silent vowel, you know like saying an "a" without the rest of it, just the first sound of it).

The way you said how we have to appeal to foreign audiences just to be seen hit hard on me ngl. I pondered to myself, "Wait if the guy behind this movie is brazillian then why did he hit the stereotyped themes?" Because it lures the 'gringa' in 💀 The theme choices were not all of ignorance, but out of marketing, and I can see that now. Even with those resource, these movies are still incredibly well-made and that's why I couldn't believe it were made out of stereotypes alone. They could have done way more, but had to appeal to outsider audiences so they could "relate" somehow. That's saddning and it's true to this day.

I never hated this movie, as far from my reality it may be (As someone from Goiás, where beaches and jungles are nowhere to be seen lol) It never represented the entirety of us- But the small details, the manerisms and every other small things, it were still apart of us that could have been brushed off easily, but it wasn't. The ipês, the street signs, those goddamn plastic chairs I hate (sorry was never fond of them lol)  Even OUR CURRENCY, they are there!!! THE EFFORT. WAS. MADE!!! It wasn't just some movie to get fame at the cost of our reputation, nono, it truly feels like a love letter to Brazil. And honestly, I could never blame it for it not showing the entirety of us because of the reasons I mentioned above, but it might just make outsiders wish to see more.

if i had a nickel for every time one of my fave youtubers randomly turns out to be brazilian id have three nickels which is more than weird to have happened thrice and im starting to wonder if theres some kind of trend in my online watching????

4:22 Rodrigo Santoro is the equivalent of early 2000s Wagner Moura, he was THE Brazilian actor to call for internacional productions at the time. He is probably most well known for playing Xerxes in 300.
