Wallace Reid and Rudolph Valentino were both dead before talking pictures took over so you could not say that their careers were ended by the arrival of sound.
There were probably quite a few actors & actresses who lost their jobs when the "talkies" came out. The movie "Singing in The Rain" tells the story accurately.đ
Those who knew Valentino described his voice as deeper and husky and with a slight Italian accent. Actress Gloria Swanson said his voice was "Delicious" and Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone With The Wind" said she fell in love with Rudy's voice the moment she met him. So who knows, maybe he could have transitioned into talkies if he hadn't died. Rudy however, said that after acting he really wanted to go behind the camera and direct.
Clara Bow! Those laughing eyes that could a moment later break your heart; and that smile that reached right out from the screen! Sad that so many of her films (as indeed so many of the stars of the era) are lost to us now. The silent stars weren't the only victims of talkies; musicians around the world were thrown out of work because movie theaters no longer needed 'in-house' accompaniment for films.
Harold Lloyd continued to do stunts even after he lost two fingers in a prop mishap. He was posing for a picture with a prop bomb, holding it near his face. When he dropped his hand to ask a question, it went off. He had to wear a prosthetic glove with two fake fingers whenever he acted after that.
Singinâ In The Rain is such a comedy gem! I LOVE that movie, and never get tired of it, a real treasureââespecially the squeaky voice of Lina Lamont!đđđđ¤Ł
