It took 3 sittings but I watched all of this.... and enjoyed it all. The wisdom of you guys is remarkable. The most simple things that I hadn't grasped in decades now become clear. Fantastic content Andy. You really should consider producing a online course on Jazz theory and improvisation as an antidote to the institutionalized 'Jazz education'.

What honesty! Amazing disclosure. Glad to hear that JACO gets the respect he deserves coming from such a high-level musician like Jeff Berlin.

Yes to part two. We want reflections on working with holdsworth et all. Thanks Andy and Jeff. Stuff like this keeps my fire lit to keep learning myself, and also continuously re-evaluate how I conduct myself with my guitar students. Much to think about.

I got to the end the next day, it depends on how early in the evening I start a vid. The music education from this channel is absolutely awesome. I have heard of more established musicians I never heard of before than any other channel, and that includes watching Beato for over 6 years and tuned in to JazzFM for 28 years. These interviews fill a gap I didnt know existed. Real music, real people, I love it. I also had 7 years therapy wayy back, such a good idea.

It took a couple days to get through it all, but I enjoy hearing Jeff Berlin's thoughts and commentary. I note how unfailingly polite he is. Thanks for sharing this conversation.

Brilliant. Love his playing on Bill Bruford's albums

Unfortunately, I lost count of the number of times Andy didn't let Jeff finish a sentence. To a point where I don't really know what JB wanted to say . Not being a hater, just being objective, and I love this channel. Fair criticism.

I enjoyed every minute of this one. Please, have this absolute giant back on again, soon. Thank you.

The problem with videos like this, apart from Andy not knowing how to just put his bloody phone on mute, is we gotta wait until another one comes along. I like the conversations, which take the form effectively of a master class in a quirky sense.

If an interviewee, feeling frustrated, says: “let me go answer this. May I?” during an extended ‘interview’ and the interviewer ignores them, continuing to talk at length, then this is a clear indication that the interview is failing.

14:00 AAAARRRGGGHHH! I think Jeff was about to wrap the whole subject up at that point. 😂

Thank you, Jeff and Andy! Excellent interview. I feel I have a much better grasp of Jeff's epistemological ideas about music after listening to him speak. I'm looking forward to part two!

Thank you for having this genius on and steering him a bit to get to the point. I hope he comes back so we can celebrate his work.

FINALLY. Fantastic interview. I am glad you gave JB the opportunity, the time to explain what he means about proper bass teaching. He gets so much stick on facebook because people don't like being told what they don't want to hear or can't debate any more, because they are brought up on youtube, instagram quick fix clips, or quick fixes with their heroes at camps etc; and they end up hurling insults because they miss the point and are stuck in their herd - "read the room" etc. It is the same with sport - the best players don't usually know how to teach because they are not teachers, they are players.

Thank you so much for the conversation and education, fellas!

Made a comment yesterday that seems to have disappeared. I could have forgot to use the comment button. Was so pleased by the interview I had to listen to the early Bruford records to hear Berlin play - I had forgot he is a singing bassist. Decent voice - no Jack Bruce but the bass playing is very fine. One of the best you have done, Mr. Edwards. Mr. Berlin is a wise man in a world of blissful ignorance that proves that the stupid have no conception of stupidity. The truth can be frightening and get in the way of one's personal income stream.

I really enjoyed this, still enjoying to be honest, and this is very much describing the same thing I was frustrated about when I worked as a research assistant in a music dept. It's really refreshing to hear a seasoned musician like Berlin to speak about these things with such an open heart, although I feel I have some reservations. Cheers!
