Thanks for your service. We are a small percentage of the overall Navy, and The Hunt For The Red October gave us great coverage. It's cool to hear about the actual filming on Blueback and the participation of her crew. I would have been so happy to break the yearly routine of WestPacs, ORSE boards and constant qualifying to make a movie onboard my boat. My favorite movie shots were those taken in the drydock. We spent time in the ARCO and it was a cool experience.

The submarine that did the emergency blow was USS HOUSTON.  In her Senior Sailors mess, theybhad a presentation from Paramount hung.

I have a pre-publication copy of Hunt for Red Oktober . I got to ride Dallas and Cincinatti for two Ops as mission package. I am fortunate enough to live in Saint Marys, GA where I get to occasionally get to see one of the Ohio-class boats entering or leaving port. Beautiful.

I was on the USS Dixon AS37, in the repair division when the movie was being filmed, and doing repairs on the Permit at the time. I was topside on the ARCO watching them film the scene where they threw the hard hat at Alec Baldwin as he entered the dry dock. It took a lot of takes to get that shot right. I was also part of the Blueback’s decommissioning ceremony.

18:31 well I hope those sailors got more than $50 for doing that 🙂.

Wait you’re the ones that told me she was the one in that scene when I did a sleepover on her

I can tell you for a fact that Blind Mans Bluff is not correct in anything they talked about that I was in - I assume all other pubs are about the same except for Jaane's - reported aboard the SSBN-635 Sam Rayburn April 10, 1964 - Plank Owner - all sea trials and both Blue and Gold Crew - they changed me to Gold for commissioning - reported aboard the SSN-603 Pollack on April 10, 1965 - this broaching boat looks like my fast attack - I spent a lot of time on the plains while surfaced on lookout - I still remember watching Red October for the first time thinking I could go to jail for talking about some of the stuff in the movie - it looked so real having played some games on the fast attach - the SSBN was all new construction and seal trials, commissioning and gone two weeks later - that transfer changed my life forever and not for the good -

This stunt would risk severe damage, so likely no real submarine was used for the scene
