I've had the Leica D-Lux 8 in Metal Gray for about a week, and it reminded me of something I'd lost: taking pictures simply because I love taking pictures.

This isn't a review.

Before smartphones became our cameras, I carried a little Sony point-and-shoot everywhere. Somewhere between the iPhone becoming my everyday camera and photography becoming part of my professional work, capturing everyday life stopped feeling quite the same.

The D-Lux 8 has given some of that back to me.

It's small enough to bring everywhere with Micah, capable enough to make photographs I want to print, and—most importantly—it lets me document our life without immediately pulling myself back into my phone.

I've been printing the photographs, shooting monochrome again, spending less time on my phone, and enjoying photography simply for the sake of photography.

And one day, Micah, this camera will be yours.
