There is no spoon feeding in the chapter overlays without prior participation in the fandom. I guarantee you a first time watcher will not be able to put two and two together

The song 'Mad World' didn't just shoot to the top of the music charts - it topped the charts for the Christmas Number One.
It was a reflection of the movies impact and was done by the fans

"Sometimes, I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion."

Honestly, even if you have a galaxy-brained understanding of the theatrical cut, you might at least understand from a writing standpoint that it takes the ambiguity too far in certain areas. I still recommend it to a first-timer, for historical significance and preserving the original sense of mystery, and after having thought about it a bit, you could enjoy The Director's Cut for its added scenes and excerpts from The Philosophy of Time Travel. You basically just listed every difference you noticed and said, "that's pretentious," or "that's inferior," with few actual arguments for HOW. Somehow, you managed to claim that it has too much exposition and spoonfeeding, ruining all sense of mystery, yet also claim its additions are even more confounding and pretentious. You're getting worked up about an eyeball graphic appearing FOUR times lmao.

I had no idea the Director's Cut had haters. I get that some people just love the version they fell in love with, which is usually the original. Maybe it's for that reason I'll always prefer the Director's Cut. Elements of surrealist horror, a slower more ominous and gothic soundscape... I guess there's always people who will disagree. To each their own.

The Philosophy of Time Travel is what I view as an absurdist mockery of Donnie's turmoil, a religious person using pseudo-science to explain what her religion failed to, arranging scientific terms into something resembling religious scripture, and still in the end being entirely unable to escape the sentiment that death is the only truth in life. It's one of my favorite additions, which I think is crafted carefully to challenge the easier perspectives the original cut lends itself to. It paints the clear and morbid picture that the film is trying to tell us our interpretations of life's mysteries might fail us.

Yes, the meaning is up to interpretation in the original, but the Director's Cut coldly and clinically mocks the idea of interpretation, which insinuates Donnie laughs because he didn't understand until the last second that his quest for interpreting his own torment was inherently absurd. It's a cut of the movie that slaps you in the face for buying into the Christ-like sacrifice interpretation simply because it presents itself as a possibility.

The point of the film then changes from "life sucks but you can make your death count for something" and morphs into "trying to ascribe meaning to incoherence is inherently absurd". The entire film depicts characters watching their motivations for living crumbling before their eyes, which paints a clear picture in both versions of the film; everyone suffers, everyone dies, everyone has their own arbitrary motivations to keep going until then. Donnie was the only person smart enough to see that none of this social bickering over values really mattered, a sentiment beautifully ruminated upon when his father has a talk with him about how other people fear his intelligence.

The only thing Donnie really cared about was connecting with someone, anybody. But nobody saw Donnie, at least not the inner part of him we follow throughout the film, which is the extended ending's entire point, that someone so close to him wasn't impacted by him as much as a bunch of random people. And even so, all those random people will remember him and have their own absurd interpretations of their memories of Donnie, none of which reflect who he actually was, a person who died alone, like every living thing.

Congratulations, you just Mrs. Farmer'ed Richard Kelly's vision. I'm sorry, your opinion is totally valid, I mean no disrespect, I just thought it was a funny comparison. You could just as easily say I'm Mrs. Farmer'ing your video with this response. It's up to interpretation, I suppose.

I dunno. I personally think the message is way stronger than the mystery. Memento mori, so cut the shit and enjoy the ride.

Honestly I'm that ignorant I'm not even going to watch the video, all I know is that without the director's cut you do not get the texts from the philosophy of time travel by Roberta Sparrow, therefor you do not get the rules of the 'universe' and so then you firstly can't comprehend the movie, and secondly the writing then doesn't make sense, because the rules of the book which are made by God(or the director) do not exist, and so then the movie does not have good writing, argue to walls please, me and my friends we've watched the director's cut our whole lives, more than 15 times, and this is one of the best movies ever, WITH the director's cut, without it's way worse, and that's a fact, good luck.

Theatrical is definitely better.  The Director's Cut was fucked the moment "Killing Moon" was removed from the title sequence.

So yes, the theatrical cut of Donnie Darko at the end of the day is the best version of the movie. However, I have a good story to go along with that: I first saw Donnie Darko right when it hit DVD. I liked it, but it didn’t impress me any. Ended up catching the directors cut a couple years later, and while it “filled in a few holes“, even that version still didn’t impress me. Flash forward to late summer/early fall of 2007. I was laid up with a broken neck and a broken leg due to a severe car accident caused by a POS drunk. At that point, I literally was at my lowest. To this day I don’t know what compelled me to do it, but I decided to watch Donnie Darko again, but it was the theatrical version. After I watched it, I fucking got it. The theatrical cut, no matter which way you slice it, is open to interpretation. At my lowest, I finally figured out what the movie was all about. That interpretation is mine, and mine alone, I don’t really share it with a lot of people. What I do know is that one person sacrificed himself for the greater good of humanity, and if that be my interpretation, I’ll take it at face value.

Remember a scene in the movie during the Halloween party at Donnie's house one of Donnie's friends is dressed up as the legend himself "HULK HOGAN" i think that this movie is really is a true man of culture for that incredible nod to "THE HULKSTER" himself in that scene R.I.P Terry thank you for making the 80s alongside John Hughes❤

I really don't know which one I have seen, but I remember it sending me goosey in the final few scenes.

Saw both versions multiple times, and I enjoy the movie either way, and honestly, they kinda blur together and I kept forgetting which one's which. Though I agree the superimposed stuff on screen in the director's edit is definitely a distraction and spoon-feeds too much and the movie was better without that. On the other hand, I preffered the soundtrack shuffle of the director's cut. Much as I love The Killing Moon, that's an ominous night-time song and does not fit the picture of a kid biking around town in the morning. INXS was a better vibe for that scene, and Killing Moon was better for the party at night.

I disagree entirely, the directors cut enhanced the film for me.

A third Donnie Darko film??!! Why? Just leave the OG alone as a cult classic and forget the second one happened.

i loved the shots of the eyes, especially if they had taken out the flashing frank images. it just adds to the surrealistic theme

Donnie Darko is a perfect teenage movie.  More than any other movie I can think of it captures the moment as a teen when you realise that the adults around you, who until now you have believed to be all knowing and wise guides to life, are just talking crap and making it up as they go along.  The feeling of confusion the original cut gives you really adds to that point.

I'd love a cut that got rid of the book excerpts and keeps the original soundtrack choices, but includes that straight-up awesome scene between Donnie and his dad at least. Absolutely amazing scene. Some of those family beats definitely deserve to be included but I definitely vibe with this video, the DC gives away a bit much

Nah. I've always been disappointed when someone puts on the theatrical cut. Now if you want to bring up the Directors Cut of the Butterfly Effect... then we'd be on the same page

I remember  not liking it and being pissed they changed the 2 best song moments in the mood

I have just watched the directors cut after only ever seeing the theatrical cut. It's worse.
The soundtrack changes were unnecessary, and along with the pacing changes due to some extra scenes, it just throws the flow of the movie off. Most added scenes were entirely unneeded.
Also, what the hell was up with the eye scenes? The computer effects and things like 'purge' appearing on screen, or the Frank image in Donnies Iris, it's terrible.
Yes, I guess you could understand the plot more, but I never really understood the plot fully for years, yet it was and still is my farourite movie.

I like to think that ambiguity, if not overdone, gives the viewer the freedom to interpret a story in a way that makes sense to that viewer, and this was certainly the case here.   I note that this is also something often done by sequels and prequels, where things are overly explained.  Even beloved Scott Adams did this on occasion.  (For example, knowing why the potted plant said "not again" did not improve things. )  So thanks for making such a cogent argument that sometimes less is more.
