For a second I thought I missed Oversimplified video somehow...

FYI:
The term, ‘turning a blind eye’, is credited to Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, a celebrated and etc. British admiral who fought and died in the French Revolutionary & Napoleonic Wars.

The reason is b/c during a naval battle, he was given the order to retreat via flag signals. When notified by his subordinates, he used a telescope to view said flag signals, but with his blind eye, and said, “I see no such order”.

Not gonna lie, losing a whole army without ever actually taking it to battle is beyond incompetent.

The Jay Treaty was wildly unpopular. It caused John Jay himself to quip, "I can travel at night from Boston to Philadelphia by the light of my burning effigies"

The fact that the UK still beat us while in the middle of a war with Napoleon was pretty amazing. The UK was not to be messed with!

6:14 I appreciate the map as well because it almost is what the US was at the time. But they forgot Georgia!

I don't have a source for this other than Canadian middle school, but we were told part of the reason hull surrendered Detroit was that Tecumseh took his much smaller force and marched it in circles, with half in the open and half hidden in the tree line, to make it seem like a much larger army was arriving to lay siege

My Michigan-born wife would have an absolute conniption if she heard the way he pronounces "Mackinac Island" in this video 🤬

It should be remember that Britain was only just over 100 years old!🦄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🦄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ahaha.  The taking of Fort Detroit.  Where Tekumseh, having learned the governor was scared of the natives, marched his people in sight of the front, sneak to the back of the line, and do it again, making his force seem 5 times larger.  The governor didn't simply surrender without consultation, he surrendered without a shot fired.

During the US embargo, there was a song: Our ships all in motion once whitened the ocean, they went whereever they would go.
And now, they're all tied up by the dockside, in poverty, sloth, and embargo!"    Bob Bailey in Maine

I think he underplayed the fact that the War Hawks in Congress wanted war specifically to take Canada and were willing to use the impressment and other issues as pretext to finally take Canada. I’m not saying this was Madison’s primary reason for war or even that the US didn’t have justifications for war, it did, but other were motivated by expansionism more than anything else. In many areas of Mew England they were very opposed to the war because they had good trade relations with the Canadians. Some refused to send militias to fight.

13:20 far from not taking notice, Adam's ordered the creation of a US Army (May 1798-June 1800) tasked with protecting the US from French Invasion led by the US, commanded by George Washington (but in practice by Hamilton)
Meaning we could have very very hypothetically seen a Washington vs Napoleon

15:15 Hamilton’s financial plan was a work of genius and Jefferson couldn’t undo it if he tried.

We had a problem with the British prior to 1800. The English oak forests that the British navy was built were greatly depleted and they put their eyes upon our forests of oaks, plus the conifers that were used for pitch and tar.
To counter this, we established Naval Reserves. Many of these reserves are still around and are now nature reserves or used as military reserves.
The new frigates were built from these reserves.
The British navy kept their fleet numbers by capturing enemy fleets. Nelson captured 3 fleets which helped much. During the Battle of the Nile, captured Dutch vessels with shallower drafts were key to Nelson’s victory.

For me, the French ships being shaped like baguettes is still funny. Also, the Family Guy reference on who gets rights in the US at this time in history was funny.

Love the Han Solo/Grido reference.

30:10 THAT IS LAKE AMERICA!!!

Brock and Tecumseth had a bit of a bromance going -on, they respected each other highly.  The campaign to take Detroit was also a masterpiece of psychological warfare waged by the two of them against the American commander and his garrison.

I got the notification right after Mr Terry's game show and was so confused for a second because I already watched it earlier lol.
