The Picos Ring is a high-altitude mountain route that traverses the Picos de Europa National Park and will test your mountaineering skills and physical strength. The longer version of this circular route crosses the three mountain ranges that make up the Picos de Europa, in the Cantabrian Mountains of northern Spain.

The route we could call the "official" Picos Ring connects the nine mountain huts in these mountains, following the trails that are generally the most accessible. I've used this official Picos Ring route as a basis for designing my own route. A Picos de Europa High Route, my way. In five days, I'll cover the three massifs of the National Park and ascend several peaks not included in the standard route.

Instead of linking shelters together, my strategy has been to link up places with water so I can camp as I please. The tricky part is that springs are very scarce in these mountains, and therefore, camping options are also limited.

A comment on the difficulty of the Picos Ring. Don't underestimate it, because hiking in the Picos is not easy. It requires good physical condition and high-mountain experience. The terrain is rugged and rocky, with very steep access gullies. Some sections of the route—very few—require short, sometimes exposed, scrambles that don't exceed grade II alpine difficulty. The trails aren't marked, and some sections have very few cairns. In short, the Picos are not exactly easy terrain for hiking, and it's worth coming well-prepared from home to enjoy the mountains here.

See you in the mountains!
