Everyone has learned Thales' theorem. Almost no one knows what Thales of Miletus, whom the Greeks considered the first of philosophers, actually thought.
For him, the universe was a living being, and water was the principle of all things; "everything is full of gods," he is said to have declared. This lecture retraces the life of this geometer, astronomer, political advisor, and sage of the 6th century BC, founder of the first model of a school of philosophy, and shows how his worldview still challenges our own.
