Where do you want to go on Amtrak?

There's an Amtrak fare discount on their web site where (coach only), for ~$500 you can travel up to 10 "segments" over a certain time period, such as 15 or 30 days. One segment might be: Emeryville to Chicago, for example. Or: Emeryville to Denver would be 1 segment, then Denver to Chicago would be a 2nd segment. Occasionally, they may discount the 10 segment ticket to ~$300.

Tbh you may have the privilege of riding on a Pullman-Standard superliner (Pullman is a very highly respected and regarded company known for their past opulent “hotel cars” and actually invented the dining car. They’re defunct now, so those superliners are their legacy) or a Bombardier Superliner II (the most modern manufacturer of passenger railway equipment, save for anyone that has Pullman’s or Budd’s patents)
They can range from about 50 or as young as 15 year old equipment.

The reason your accommodations are only one outlet is that probabaly the heaviest loads would have been an electric razor or hair dryer for the average traveler. Now with everyone essentially lugging around miniature car batteries in their pocket, the single outlet really dates the design.

Also the Superliners really date themselves, they where made before any ADA standards. They did have a rebuild at some point, but the accommodation room is lower level only, and thus those travelers really do miss out on the views because everything is nearly trackside only.

Supposedly Amtrak wanted to add ADA equipment on their proposal for their future bi-levels, but everyone looks at them like they are crazy.
Hopefully they find a builder willing to give it a shot, I do think anyone that takes Amtrak should have the priceless experience of cross country train travel in the U.S..

Also, I would not count on Amtrak being on time for arrivals. Always factor in for a delay as much as 12 hours, or essentially book a stay for a day’s layover before undertaking your next leg of your journey.

Oh, the delays are mostly attributed to Amtrak not having right of way, the freight carriers have track rights.
