Sam's trains evil backstory

We got sams trains' supervillian origin story before GTA6

Can't beat an old Triang princess. Just picked up one for a tenner from ebay, gave it a strip down clean, lubrication and a pair of new brushes. Runs like a dream.

It could be worse. In 2008, Tornado was being tested at the Great Central Railway. At the time, I was employed as a caretaker at Swithland Sidings on the Great Central Railway. One day, I loaded my dirty laundry into a big tote bag, and proceeded to walk to Loughborough along the track.

I dutifully phoned the duty traffic manager and asked if there were any trains I should be aware of. "Just Tornado testing at Kinchley Lane". Righto. He did NOT tell me that Tornado was solely on the up line, going back and forth at speed.

So me, obeying the rules, I walked facing 'oncoming traffic'. I heard Tornado whistle, and moved to a place of safety while it passed. Then I resumed my walk.

Then five minutes later I heard a whistle behind me. I though nothing of it. Down trains use the down line, obviously. I'm walking north on the southbound track. Completely safely.

Then the whistling got more frantic. VERY FRANTIC.

Then I turned to look - Tornado was only 100 yards away, approaching me at 45mph, tender first, in the wrong direction. I literally dived into stinging nettles to avoid being pulverised.

This is why if you work on the railway - GET MORE INFORMATION THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED. The DTM told me I was safe. There was a critical misunderstanding which nearly killed me.

Eight years wife stumbled across a brand new Hornby Tornado and Flying Scotsman in a charity shop for £60 for the pair,  I then installed a Hornby sound chip into the Tornado, however the supplied speaker could not go into the tender, so I subsequently installed a sugar cube speaker under the chimney.  It still runs beautifully.  A pity having updated this they haven’t accommodated pick ups in the tender etc, and provision for the speaker.

Its awesome that you took a bad experience and turned it into a dream career of sorts, while saving others from being scammed!

4:16 Have we just witnessed the Sam's Trains Origin Story 😂

wow this engine looks beautiful with the blue

Thank you for plainly pointing out the bad. Very much appreciated.

I have a Hornby RailRoad Peppercorn A1 "Bon Accord" in my favourite BR Blue livery from the massive "The Majestic" train set (that is ironically nearly identical to this Tornado save for the name and numbering); it was my first true scale model locomotive and I love it to bits, even though my collection's grown so much now with far better detailed models. So controversial as they are, Hornby's Peppercorn A1's will always have a special place in my heart.

I appreciate your take on overpricing by greedy model manufacturers!

I was glad to hear you mention Thompson in the history segment, as Peppercorn's pacifics have their roots in Thompson's designs (mainly the A1/1 and A2/3 respectively).

Thompson also redesignated and renumbered the majority of LNER stock as part of a reorganisation scheme, during which the Gresley A1s were reclassified as A10s.

You have saved me a lot of money recently... with the Hornby Saint review. These were on most stands at Alexandra palace for £211 when we arrived.. and still on the stands when we left!

Very nice and cool. Keep being awesome my friend ur trains are always the best. Keep up the good work

I think if you do a revisit on a locomotive it should have another separate log book

BR Express Blue gotta be the best looking BR steam era livery

Apologies if you've already done this Sam and I've missed it, but would you be able to do a direct side by side comparison of a Railroad and a Railways model so people can see what they're getting if they pay for the premium model

Perfect timing with this one because I will be meeting the real tornado in person for the second time next week at the east lancashire railway

Many of us weren't very impressed by the "Design Clever" idea Hornby came up with, where they basically produced 1980s style bodies with the bare minimum of separately fitted parts,  However, for the Railroad range they were great -  I picked up Cock o' the North, Duke of Gloucester and Tornado for £70-80 each, which were big locos for very little money.  I fitted a 5 pole motor to Cock o' the North and it now sets off very smoothly, and I wish the others also had 5 pole motors.  Provided Hornby doesn't pretend they are anything other than basic models, I don't have a problem with them, but I can understand you feeling a bit ripped-off thinking that you were getting something a bit more special, given the price premium and packaging it came in.

You’re ability to find hornby railroad models in the railways range in your youth is impressive
