During the turbulent reign of Alexei Mikhailovich the Quietest, Rus' experienced all sorts of things. The rise of the unpopular Moscow Patriarch Nikon, his reforms, rejected by the Old Believers, and the subsequent schism in the church. As is well known, all changes primarily affect the common people, and so numerous popular uprisings swept across the Russian land. The film's hero, Semyon Lazarev, defends the interests of the so-called "gulyashchie" (walkers)—ordinary peasants unwilling to pay high taxes, as well as runaway peasants, whom those in power preferred to associate with bandits, thieves, and robbers. Soon, Semyon will become one of the instigators of the peasant "Copper Revolt," and later finds himself among the troops led by Stepan Razin.
