🎿 I Skied the Salomon Shift 2 Everywhere – Here’s the Truth (2026 Review & How-To) ❄️

I’ve skied the Salomon Shift 2 everywhere — piste, powder, off-piste, touring, variable snow, and long days in the mountains. In this video, I give you an honest 2026 review of the Salomon Shift 2 bindings, breaking down what works brilliantly, what doesn’t, and who these bindings are actually for.

This isn’t a showroom review — it’s based on real skiing in real conditions, plus a practical how-to guide covering setup, transitions, and common mistakes.

I have used the Shift 1 for 5 years. Not had any issues at all. No ice build up although that can happen to any bindings with changing warm cold temps. Step lift is a good to be higher but will always be choice factor on the touring you do. No issues on piste feel is great for everyday moderate to hard skiing but clearly never going to win any slaloms. Weight, yes heavy compared to others but honestly no issue for me and my sandwiches weigh more. Upgrade? Not until I have too.

Even on the Shift-1, Solomon made improvements year to year -I used them on piste for 3 seasons without issue except for the 110 ski brake which was barely wide enough on my 110 skis. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Shift-2 again for a side-country setup.

I totally agree, has been on shift 1 for many years, the shift 2 just feels more precise and trustworthy. You still need to clean boot and bindings for snow/ice to get the safest operation (as for other set-ups)

Second season with my Shift 2s, loving the versatility and ease of use.

I've been using Shift 1 with atomic backlands 95 since 2018. No issues. The only downside is the weight (vs ski touring bindings) and the transition would be tricky if you are on some icy ridge but generally do cruisy tours rather than ski mountaineering. I even skied weeks on the piste all in ski mode and never had a pre-release or whatever. Maybe I'm not going fast enough!

Love my shift 2…no issues

They look very fiddly. I've been on a frame AT binding since from the beginning with Ramer bindings back in the 70s, but looking to shed some weight now that I'm 70 years old. I like what I see in the ATK Hy Free. Looks very simple to switch from downhill to touring.

First time using them and have found them great so far. Most annoying thing i've found is the brakes get very tangled when you put skies together to to carry them. Really hard to separate after! I thought I was the only one having this problem (120mm wide brakes for 114 underfoot skis I thought was the issue), but a friend with them said the exact same thing. Odd!

I own one ski and since ~5 years have a Shift 1 on them now. First they were on a Line Sir Francis Bacon as a do it all ski (touring, piste, park). Since I went touring much more than i went park riding and really wanted something lighter, i put them on a Blizzard Hustle 10. I use it fro everything and can push it pretty hard on the slopes aswell. Never had any bigger issues mechanically. The only thing i had was the toe lever falling down while skinning up in the beginning. The clear cover got replaced with one with nobs on the side. Haven't had this problem since. And recently in a crash the breaks got bent, but was able to bend them back with no problem.
In general, the breaks are too short and too flat on the shift 1 and sometimes barely hold the ski in place due to this. But apparently, this is something they didn't change...

What are your ski boots, do you have one set up boots or more than one set of more burly and lighter touring boots?

@mattwoodford1820 8 months ago

That looks like the kind of setup that would be good for my knee. Is it possible to demo them on an introductory back country course or something similar?

@n-da-bunka2650 8 months ago (edited)

Does the Shift 2 use the EXACT SAME mounting holes as the shift One so that no additional drilling would be needed to change from the older to the newer? If not then... probably just stay with the 1s because I have not had any serious problems with them myself. Edit: The only thing that gives me caution is that "click" of the toe piece when securing it for downhill as I wonder what exactly is "clicking" because it sounds "thin" as if its almost breaking something under the mechanism

Have you tried the other Hybrids (Dukes, Cast, Head hybrid) to compare to Shifts? I have Dukes, they are burly but consequently weigh a ton! Ciao from Italy
