1) It clears unirrigated land that you could use for space for buildings that don't require irrigation (like housing).
2) It gives the nearby wild trees more time to grow and spread new ones.
3) It gives you a little more time before you need to build a forester.
It doesn't make a HUGE difference, but it gives you some extra logs and a little more time to set up more sustainable methods.
