When my husband and I flew into Maui, we saw that airplane over on the edge of the runway covered up with a blue tarp. So glad most of them survived.

The pilots are special people, how does one stay composed and function so highly in such an event?

@curtyzzz 6 months ago

That is what you call damage tolerance.

That this heavily used aircraft survived enough to actually land, and almost everyone lived, is a magnificent testimony to this wonderful aircraft. All kudos to the crew too.

Wow. 89,000 flights for that plane. I've heard of driving your car 'till the wheels fall off; I guess, in the case of a plane, you fly it 'til the roof blows off.

There's an aspect to this miracle landing that nobody mentioned. The weight of an airplane is supported on the wings. When the top of the cabin blew off, the weight of everything in front of the wings - part of the cabin, and the cockpit, etc. would put the floor into compression and the roof into tension - but after it blew off, there was no roof - so all support came from the floor beams. It is reasonable that without the support of the ceiling, the nose would bend downward - but in this case, the bend was noted. It bent so much that it was visible! However, on landing, the front of the plane was once more supported by the nose wheel, which would have made the cockpit bend upwards again - and we all know what happens when you bend a piece of metal first one way then the other. On top of that, a plane always bumps along the runway, so the forces on the floor weren't static. This may have been a greater miracle than was portrayed. If the plane had broken at that point, the result would have been catastrophic.

This airplane incident just goes to prove how important is to keep your seat belt on throughout the entire flight no matter what, even if the seat belt lights indicate it's safe to unbuckle. You never know what happens so when I'll fly again, I learn from these videos to always keep my seat belt on.
