PACKAGE PACKAGES
The Black Forest – one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. Once a pure hiking paradise, it now offers other attractions as well. Which is the best value? Should you book leisure and wellness packages on-site or opt for an all-inclusive package online?
Johannes Zenglein is staying in Winden in the Elz Valley. His four-star hotel, the Elztalhotel, boasts one of the largest wellness offerings in Baden-Württemberg. Our presenter booked a starter package for €322. This includes one night with full board, a facial treatment, a massage, and two days' access to the entire spa area. Had Johannes booked all the services in his wellness package individually, he would have had to pay a total of €340.
Nevertheless, it's not easy for guests to determine whether the wellness packages offer good value for money. Certificates and seals of approval can be an indicator. A few years ago, Stiftung Warentest (a German consumer organization) examined 53 of them. Nine seals from five associations were rated as helpful. These seals provide good guidance, explains Arne Mellert, Managing Director of the Baden-Württemberg Spa Association.
However, it's not easy for guests to determine whether the wellness packages offer good value for money. INDIVIDUAL OFFERS
But what does a wellness vacation look like when you book all the services individually? Johannes is heading to Bad Wildbad to find out. Besides classic spas and thermal baths, the town also offers plenty of outdoor activities – for example, on the Sommerberg mountain. The main attraction: the treetop walkway. For €11, visitors can stroll 20 meters above the ground. A family ticket costs €26.
Next, our presenter wants to know about the bathing options. The Vital Therme spa in Bad Wildbad has been around for more than 50 years. A day ticket costs up to €17. This includes swimming, sauna, steam room, and participation in all the exercise classes. Wellness treatments like massages cost extra. A partial body massage, for example, costs €16 for 15 minutes. At the wellness hotel, it was €42 for 30 minutes.
But are treatments at a thermal spa always cheaper than at a hotel? Expert Arne Mellert says: “I think that spas can calculate costs differently than hotels. And you have to see it this way: if the spa specializes in pampering a certain number of guests with massages each day, the frequency at the hotel will certainly be lower. But that doesn't mean that one massage is worse than another.”
MORE ACTION
For those who prefer something less tranquil, water parks are a good option. The Badeparadies Schwarzwald (Black Forest Water Park) in Titisee-Neustadt is the largest in the Black Forest. Guests can choose between three price categories from €21 to €36. A lot has changed at the water park due to the pandemic. Previously, up to 6,000 guests came each day. Now only 1,800 are allowed in. The entire operation had to be revamped. This is costing millions in revenue, says Managing Director Jochen Brugger.
FOREST BATHING
Johannes' next activity is called Shinrin Yoku. Translated, it means “forest bathing.” Reno von Buckenberg shows how it's done. Six years ago, Reno gave up his engineering job and moved here. As a certified nature guide, he wants to introduce people to the forest and its unique features, including his "tree friends." The four-hour tour costs 120 euros.
TRADITIONAL BATHING
Before concluding his wellness trip, our presenter wants to enjoy a bathing experience like in the old days in Oppenau. The trained masseur Reinhard Bosch fulfilled his dream of a historic mountain village here 13 years ago with the Bader Alm. An overnight stay costs 160 euros – including bathing in a historical bathing suit with pine needle foam and meals.
CONCLUSION
Wellness is incredibly individual. As a beginner, it's worth booking a package, for example, at a wellness hotel. There, you'll be guided through the process and know the costs. Those who put together their own wellness trip and need less luxury can save money.
