Two large bass drums.
Same size. Same basic construction. Same tuning and muffling.

So why do they sound different?

In this video, I compare a 1950s WFL 26x14 bass drum (mahogany/poplar) with a 1969 Ludwig 26x14 (maple/poplar). Both drums share a similar design and lineage, but the difference in tonewood reveals some interesting—and very audible—changes in how they behave.

If you’ve ever wondered whether tonewood really matters in drum shells, this is a practical listen.

A quick note on levels

These recordings were not level-matched. The mic settings stayed the same for both drums, so any differences in amplitude and perceived loudness are part of how each drum naturally behaves.
