Have you heard of Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year celebration that draws people from all around the world? In Edinburgh, one of the largest New Year festivals on the planet unfolds over several days. Hogmanay is said to be even more important than Christmas in Scotland, and it comes with a wealth of traditions that I found utterly fascinating — so I wanted to share them with you in this video.

There are many stories, meanings and customs that I couldn’t fully cover in the video, and some of the legends have multiple versions, so what I share here isn’t the whole picture. Even so, I hope this gives you a sense of what a Scottish New Year feels like, and that you enjoy experiencing it with me.

Hello Yu, I hope 2026 has started well for you. I've been re-watching and enjoying many of your vlogs and appreciating anew how well-crafted and deeply thought through they are. They always succeed in transmitting all your joy and wonder at simply being alive to experience and share the everyday happenings of your life in the UK. At the risk of sounding pretentious, it's obvious from the comments people leave that this touches something in them at a profound level, whether that be of memory or feeling and emotion. My definition of art is something that closes the gap between you and everything that is not you and so passes from feeling to meaning. By that definition, your vlogs succeed every time! I especially delight in the way you interact with your regular correspondents from Japan. Many clearly share in your joy and feelings too. It is very touching.
There are many problems facing the UK (and the world!) right now but I'm so glad they have you as a guide to some of the good things in British culture.
By the way, January 26th is Robbie Burns Night - as you pointed out, Scotland's national poet and the writer of the lyrics of 'Auld Lang Syne'. I may try to find a haggis tomorrow (from M&S 😊) to have a Burns supper of haggis, tatties and neeps on Sunday.

スコットランドの年末の過ごし方、知らないことがたくさんありました🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿📝色々な知識を共有してくださってありがとうございます💮そうなんだ！とか、へぇ〜なるほど〜とか、ひとり呟きながら興味深く拝見しました。ひとつの番組を観てるようです、本当にすごい！✨
物事の起源を知ることは、大切なことですよね。生活に馴染んで当たり前のことのようにやっていることから季節のイベントや慶事まで、文化や慣習には意味があって始まって、伝統や日常となっているんだなと、改めて感じました。

昨年はYuさんの動画に出会えて日々の楽しみが増えました、ありがとうございます！お会いしたことがないのに、動画を拝見しているだけで価値観や感性が合う方だなぁと勝手に感じておりまして、すっかりファンになってしまいました😁今年も引き続き、素敵な動画がアップされるの楽しみにしています🥰

Happy 2026 Yu! It looks like you had a great time in Edinburgh. I think it's my favourite British city. Although I've been there many, many times I've never been to the Hogmanay celebration. You were lucky to have cold but bright weather to experience the best of the city. I loved the spectacular torchlight procession. It must have been a thrill to be part of it.

エジンバラには学生時代の夏休み二日間だけ行ったことがあり、エジンバラ城に行ったり、タータンチェックのスカートや、ダイアナ妃が着ていたような、テリアのたくさんついたセーターを買った記憶があります。☺️言葉の発音に戸惑い、トラベラーチェックをたくさん使いました．昔昔30年以上前のお話です。でも、当時のホストマザーとはずっと繋がっていて、2年前ひさしぶりに渡英し、1人で不安ながらも再会と、観光を楽しめました．また今年もう一度再会する予定で楽しみです😊

PS I was thinking of old Welsh new year traditions and two particularly came to mind...'Calennig', which is a variation on first-footing and new year gift-giving and is accompanied, as is often the case in Wales, by song. The other tradition which is a little more sinister and scary is that of the 'Mari Lwyd' or 'Grey Mare'. I will let you discover all about this as it's a little strange to describe. It is still a living tradition in some Welsh villages. One tradition which has, thankfully, died out is that of 'hunting the wren' which occurred between Boxing Day and 12th Night. It is interesting to learn and find out about these customs. I'm happy you find this the case too.
