Think it’s too late to start seeds? Don’t put those seed packets away just yet! 🌱 There are still plenty of flowers and other plants you can start from seed in late summer—and some actually benefit from getting a head start now.

In this video, I’m sharing seeds you can still start now, even as August comes to an end. Depending on your climate and growing season, late-summer sowing can give you plants for fall, help you get a jump on next spring, or let nature do some of the work for you through the colder months.

I’ll also talk about why timing isn’t as simple as following a date on the calendar. Your climate, first frost date, and the type of seed you’re growing all make a difference.

If you love growing flowers from seed, saving money in the garden, and finding simple ways to grow more plants, this one is for you.

I love hearing your chickens! I used to have chickens and I really loved them. I love the wine glasses, and your husband did a fantastic job painting those sunflowers! very impressive.

I’m NC zone 8a and unfortunately too hot to start cool weather crops right now. I’ve attempted to grow them inside but not a lot of success. I do have a greenhouse but it’s way too hot to put anything in there. I do envy your cooler weather. Thank you for sharing!😊

Those glasses are beautiful. Your husband did an amazing job on his as well. The temperatures here are going back up, hovering around 100 degrees F. As of today through the next week. With the extreme temperature swings, the best decision I made this year is planting ground cover roses. No deadheading and they just keep blooming bunches at a time. Have a wonderful Sunday/week. Watching your videos when it is raining I love the most. In the low AZ desert rain is a rare occurrence 🥴! I sleep at night so well when we do get that rain
For my area, we don't flood, so bring on the heavy rain!

Temps are dropping here in Michigan, and I’m busy harvesting vegetables and collecting seeds for next year - annual and perennial flowers and vegetables. But I’m a teacher so I don’t have time to start seeds right now. I’ll do some winter sowing during Christmas vacation and in January and February. I like your approach to growing perennials from seed though. I like to take my seeds and do different things with them — direct sow in fall and spring, winter sow, and start them in flats in spring. That way if I mess up or the weather doesn’t cooperate or the seeds prove temperamental I still have a chance to get some to germinate. I especially like to do that with unfamiliar or native plants. I’m crazy about natives! I try new ones every year. Best of luck with your seeds!

i learned of soil blocking this year - i cannot tell you how much faster those plants take off compared to my cell-started ones!! I think it is maybe a skill issue in my planting, but i was amazed how quickly the seedlings transition from soil block to in-ground, compared to the ones i did in the regular seed tray. it was cheap on amazon, and i used the same potting soil i do in my cells.

I’ve gotten most all of my seeds from Walmart. Idk if I just got lucky, but after my online purchases, I was sent an incentivized review offer. These seeds ranged in price from $1.96-$2.97 if I remember the higher price correctly. Def all under $3 by Ferry-Morse or Burpee. The reviews offered me $5 per review! I had at least 85% germination rate or higher. Very successful. You can guess what I turned around and ordered with my $25 total earned from those reviews 😂. I’ve never ever been able to keep any Lavender bought as a plant alive, not even Phenomenal which is supposed to be the mother of all Lavender for the Deep South, but all of my Munstead seeded and are doing very well. The Zinnias were the highest success rate of all.

It is super hard to find good pansy seeds! Which is nuts b/c you can't save seeds from pansies. Botanical Interests just in the past month or so added a bunch, though. One of the better selections I've been able to find!

Is the plastic or fabric on the walls of the greenhouse a type of shade fabric blocking the sun 10%, 40%, 50%, 80%, etc.? The painted glasses are very very pretty! Good Job!

professional growers have equipment we don't have. They have misters and automatic watering systems. Their environment is ideal. The plants I started in much smaller cells kept dying on me. They dried out too fast and never did well. I have much better luck using moisture domes and 12 cells. I tried many seeds at the wrong time and they never germinated until I threw the seeds outside and forgot about them. So just remember seeds we plant now may just wait until their conditions suit them. I think your small trays will work for you. Waiting to see how yours grow. I love your numbering system! I am always losing those lables😢😢😢

I live in an area where the frost is really mild only junaury and February are cold, it's rare to reach 0°c at night , even if it snows it will be just for a day ,so if I sow calendula will it bloom through winter ?

I hope I don’t sound too stupid but is there enough time before snow/ frost for seedlings to get started growing and then survive the winter? I’m a bit confused when to put them out.
