"Wait, it's all the overworld theme?"

"Always has been."

So this is why he was gone for so long.

"It's my sleepover, I get to pick the movie."

Kondo is legitimately a genius. To not only write such elegant timeless tunes, simple yet catchy and displaying a mastery of leitmotif, but to do it on such limited hardware really shows he is a true artist.

Tom Brier covering the end theme to SMW is still a great masterpiece.

"Babe, I know what movie we are watching tonight"

I legitimately had tears in my eyes by the end of this video. Not just because of all the wonderful memories of Koji Kondo's music, but because of the love, understanding, and deep appreciation on display in this video.

Incredibly well done, thank you so much for sharing this with us. <3

I think the hardware limitation argument makes people often fail to realize what a choice the quietude of the instruments Kondo used at the time was.

Like, the SNES has sounds that were more like a synthesized pipe organ. But for the castle theme, Kondo chose something that was more like a reed organ, and it’s really effective. It’s not staring down a hallway with the monster at the other end. It’s sitting in a chair while the principal stares down at you.

1:19:49 It's actually in the Special World. You have to wait until the Special world theme plays 8 times, in the 9th iteration, it eventually changes to the SMB theme.

I have always loved the music for this game, and the cohesion is why. Getting all the theory breakdown is greatly appreciated.

I have nothing to contribute. This is just cool as hell.

This games soundtrack is possibly the most responsible for my love of "jazz chords".
It's one of my favorite games of all time, and one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time.

this video was actually a fairly suitable replacement for my meds actually

I'm ashamed of how many times I heard these songs and how little I LISTENED to them. Amazing work!

Excruciating detail, you say? Oh, we're eating good today!

43:35 Man, you have no idea... the feeling of setting up your brand new SNES- plugging in the controllers and that satisfying "thunk" of the power button, only to be greeted with the 16-bit colors and sounds -- mind-blowing for an 11 year old kid! The SNES was my favorite era in videogaming, and I still remember playing SMW for the first time.

What an incredible video. It's both a shame and a blessing it takes something like this to understand the brilliance of the music. What an absoluye genious!

I can’t begin to explain how revolutionary this game was when I was a kid and we got the SNES for Christmas.

And yes, the music was a HUGE part of it. The beauty of the compositions and the fidelity of the sounds… combine that with the next gen graphics… it was mind-blowing for me and my little sister. It really felt like the future had arrived.

Younger people will probably never experience a leap like that. Things have evened out and it feels like it’s all incremental progress now.

Awesome video, but minor nitpick: the secret 16-bit Mario 1 theme shows up in the Special World, not Star World.

Also, I was today years old when I learned that Star World's theme is just a slowed-down Starman theme...
