Rich is such an awesome trainer. My riding went light yrs ahead after training with rich.how he focuses you on the core fundamentals first is the key. Have you tried getting the student to just stop when the front lands on the log? It should force them to move very slowly, as they'll be nervous about going over the bars from a hard stop. Then work on increasing front lift without gaining forward velocity.
my take away : you sometimes using a see-saw ollie kinda motion with the body but even if you didnt its gonna pop if you time it right slow travel blip to raise the tire, that will start to compress the rear, the tire touches the wall (@~1/2-1/3rd of the tire height from the bottom), this compresses both the front and rear, the tire rolls off the obstacle and flicks forward losing front compression and at the same time a second blip drives force into the ground as the decompression flick of the front tire allows the bike to decompress the rear and it adds to the hop.
