The Mexica built a temple, but were not welcomed in the basin, and in 1299 they were massacred on Chapultepec Hill. Some Mexica managed to escape and swam to the original islets. They settled on the large islet, surviving there as fishermen and hunters. They ate insects, grasshoppers, chicatana ants, escamoles, water bugs, varieties of white worms, and the mountain bugs: jumiles, as well as mushrooms, quelites, purslane, and quintoniles. They had a political and social structure and were highly organized, which allowed them to build a great city: "Tenochtitlán, place of the stone prickly pear."
