I spent time invigilating group exhibitions, watching majority of visitors walk right past skilled, intellectually stimulating work — on the level of Levitan, Kuindzhi, Korovin, Sargent, Sorolla — to buy painfully mediocre, laboriously “realistic” safe landscapes and still lifes instead.
It crushed me. I realized I’ll never sell a single painting unless I step on the throat of my own aesthetic and visual literacy. It’s a sad truth nobody talks about.
