What a fun era! People forget that Kobe was still proving himself. To many of us he was the talented kid who threw up a ton of airballs just two seasons prior! The shortened '99 season was a breakout year for him, yes, but it didn't count as a full season, and the Lakers had still utterly collapsed in the playoffs. The Lakers gave him a huge push over fan favorite Eddie Jones, a talented shooting guard in his own right, and had also chosen him as the second option over perennial top 5 in the league scorer Glen Rice! Kobe had a lot to prove and boy did he prove it!!
Not to mention this is Shaq at his absolute peak. Completely dominant inside and hungry for the championship. When Shaq was inhaling rebounds, look out! That meant your ass! Shaq's offensive abilities were never a problem as he operated so close to the paint. But when he showed that extra hustle for rebounding and defense...it was gametime!
The league as well had recovered from that awkward lockout season and we're only two seasons removed from the Jordan era! A lot of good teams from the 90s felt it was their last chance for the championship (Miami being one of them), but there were new super teams being assembled (Houston, Dallas, Portland, etc.) Exciting times were to come! Great time to be an NBA fan!
God, these are my great childhood memories! The old days of never doing my homework, instead just staying up late on a school night(cause I was on eastern time)to watch the Lakers. The low quality tv, VCR days. Glad this was an NBC telecast cause it was actually on early instead of late at night on NBA league pass.
I feel old, but bringing back my childhood memories is just pure sentimental
