What does the murder of Charlie Kirk have to do with the Book of Mormon—and are we seeing an ancient warning beginning to repeat itself in America?
One year after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University, I went back to the Book of Mormon and noticed a disturbing pattern.
In Helaman 8:27, the prophet Nephi announced:
“Behold, your judge is murdered, and he lieth in his blood.”
When the people rushed to the judgment seat, they discovered that the chief judge had indeed been murdered.
But the murder wasn’t the beginning of the story.
The Book of Mormon describes what was already happening underneath the surface of Nephite society: contention, corruption, secret combinations, rejection of God, political struggles, anger toward those who preached uncomfortable truths, persecution—and eventually murder.
And that raises a serious question:
Are we repeating the pattern?
In this video, we examine the parallels between the warnings contained in the Book of Mormon and conditions we can see developing in our own society.
We also look beyond Helaman.
Lehi warned Jerusalem—and people became angry and sought his life.
Abinadi confronted wickedness—and was killed.
Before Christ’s appearance in 3 Nephi, those who boldly testified of Christ were persecuted and even secretly put to death.
And Jesus Himself lamented:
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee.”
The scriptures repeatedly show a frightening progression:
TRUTH → ANGER → HATRED → PERSECUTION → VIOLENCE
Charlie Kirk was not a prophet, and I am not claiming that Helaman specifically prophesied his assassination.
The question is about the pattern.
Charlie Kirk publicly defended Christianity and deeply held moral and political convictions. People had every right to disagree with him, challenge him, protest him, or debate him.
But murder is different.
And when anyone begins celebrating the murder of someone because they hated his beliefs, Christians should stop and ask what is happening to our culture.
There is another warning we discuss in this video as well:
What happens when people stop believing—and stop belonging?
What happens as Christianity loses influence, people leave churches, and rising generations grow up without faith in Jesus Christ?
And for Latter-day Saints, what responsibility do we have to make the restored gospel compelling, visible, loving, and grounded in truth for the next generation?
The answer cannot simply be more political anger.
Jesus Christ taught:
“He that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil.”
President Russell M. Nelson has repeatedly called upon disciples of Jesus Christ to become peacemakers.
That does NOT mean surrendering truth.
It means having the courage to defend truth without allowing disagreement to become hatred.
The Book of Mormon was written for our day.
Maybe we shouldn’t simply read about the collapse of Nephite society and ask:
“How could they let this happen?”
Maybe we should ask:
“Could it happen to us?”
The Nephites’ history has already been written.
Ours hasn’t.
Watch to the end, open your scriptures, and decide for yourself whether the warnings in Helaman have anything to say to America today.
📖 SCRIPTURES DISCUSSED:
