Nan Dungortheb, the Valley of Dreadful Death, was the one region of First Age Beleriand that Morgoth's own armies would not cross. Here is why.
In the First Age, between the Mountains of Terror and the Girdle of Melian, lay a corridor of poisoned water and living darkness — the deadliest stretch of ground in all Beleriand. Not a fortress. A kill-box built by the land itself, and haunted by the brood of Ungoliant, the creature that drank the light of the Two Trees.
This is the full account of Nan Dungortheb: its geography, the origin of its horror, what it did to the minds of those who entered it, and how a single crossing set in motion the fall of Gondolin.

Camp 1 — She was a Maia, a spirit of the world corrupted by Morgoth in the beginning, no different in origin from a Balrog.
Camp 2 — She was something older and outside the Music altogether, a hunger that descended from the Darkness before Arda and served no one.
The texts say the Eldar never knew where she came from. So we're asking you: Maia, or something Arda was never meant to contain? Make your case. ⬇
