On April 12, 2018, X-SHS hosted Hervé Zwirn, CNRS Research Director, for a lecture on the topic "Quantum Mechanics: Does the World Exist?"

Quantum mechanics, currently the most effective and best-verified physical theory available to us, has extremely counterintuitive consequences when its formalism is applied to our understanding of the world around us. Our common sense is severely challenged, and the notion of reality to which we are accustomed seems to dissolve, replaced by a more distant vision of what constitutes "the world."

Hervé Zwirn (X 75) is a physicist and epistemologist. A CNRS Research Director, his research focuses on the foundations of quantum mechanics, formal epistemology, the axiomatic formalization of reasoning methods, and the behavior of complex systems. Author of several works on these issues, he was awarded the André Lequeux Prize for Philosophy of Science by the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences for "The Limits of Knowledge" (Odile Jacob, 2000). He currently directs the Athena Thematic Valorization Consortium, a CNRS laboratory responsible for promoting research conducted across all French research laboratories in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
