Hello from England (UK). Great video, took me back to my college days where the curious student (me) would 'adjust' the voltage on the bench power supply to observe the effect on the components...'adjust for minimum smoke'  😂

I knew all of the contents of this video from the thumbnail, but still watched it all the way through; you're an excellent, and inportantly, a very thorough presenter.

And, of course, adding a filter cap across the bulb fed the rectified wave will help bulb life too by smoothing out the current variations. In doing pinball programming we put the filaments under hi-speed cam and you could see the filament dance as it's varying current, and therefore magnetic field,  pushed against ambient fields like the earth or other nearby components. The smoother you get that current, the less induced mechanical fatigue stress

Simple but deep. Mastering the basics is always the first solid foundation to stand on to understand everything else. Thanks, Mr. Carlson!

Also, nice looking resistors indeed.

I used to design control panels for industrial applications, I would place a resistor across the switches that were used to light status indicators. The resistors were calculated so that there was always a little current passing thru the filament of the bulb, this kept the filament ever so slightly heated and prevented blowing the filaments from a cold start.

When the filament is cold, it's resistance is quite low, it increases as it heats up. This low resistance when cold is why a bulb generally blows at switch on because the inrush current can be very high. The resistor simply restricts that inrush current

The resistor has a hidden feature: It drastically limits the "inrush" current until filament is properly bright yellow. The diode, although simple, has the inrush on all startups, on the first semicycles.

Back when I was servicing pokies (slot machines) I would often replace the lamps in the buttons with ones with a higher voltage to improve longevity. Having players smash the buttons while playing didn't help. I put in 32V lamps in a machine that was 24V. They would still glow bright enough and would last a long long time. One manufacturer created plug in LED replacements, but these came with their own issues with heat being generated by the current limiting resistors, dry joints would develop.
