Back in the day of the late Benny Parsons and Bob Jenkins, Winston "No Bull 5", no double yellow line, racing back to the caution, and points/$$$ paid at the halfway mark! It wasn't my first NASCAR Cup race (Michigan Fall 89), but it was my first of many at Talladega. We lived in Wisconsin and made the trip down for the Fall race from 98 to 04, and then 06 & 07. Hard to believe this was 25 years ago! I had been a racing fan since I was a kid, but this was the first season that I went all in on NASCAR, and Mark Martin was my guy! Watching this gives me all the warm, fuzzy feelings! âşđ
Never have been a huge NASCAR guy but when I was 5 or 6 years old, my dad had business out of state so he thought it'd be fun to fly me out to Talladega with him. We got to see this race in great seats and he had VIP access to the track before it started and I remember sitting on his shoulders as he walked around and seeing all the cars. He asked me which car was my favorite (mind you, I knew absolutely nothing about NASCAR) and I immediately pointed to Jeff Gordon's car because of the colors... Was stoked when he came 2nd! Great memory.
The drivers used their Pepsi 400 schemes in this race as you see the Wild Berry Skittles and Small Soldiers schemes on the #36 and #18 cars among others. They then packed up and headed to Daytona right after this one and ran the Pepsi 400 under the lights the next week.
I remember my Dad had recorded this race on VHS, and for whatever reason held onto it. It was normal for him to do that with Bill Elliott wins, but seldom other races. Being that Dale Jarrett was my favorite, I used to watch this tape over and over. Sure brings back some memories of being a kid and throwing this on after school. Thanks for the upload!
lol, I always thought it was my tv back then that was causing strangeness at times with orange and red hues on the cars, but I see it at 13:03 on Ricky Rudd's car.
Jeff gordon had the champion's luck here. While almost a lap down, he is at the front and clear of the big one. While Mark Martin chasing in points, doing his race on the lead lap, gets caught in the big one. omg
I gave Dale the penny that he taped on his dash the Friday before the race and he sent me an autograph picture that said âthanks for the million dollar pennyâ that was the coolest thing thatâs ever happened to me in my life even up to this point lol. Iâm sure he remembers it. Iâd like to talk with Jason again but donât know how to get in touch anymore. Oh well just a cool part of my past.
