Peaked in 2001. Slow decline started in 2014 with funding dried up. 97 was a great time. I went to the Jazz fest with my dad! I was at Uni then, grew up in the East end (all semi-gentrified now). I miss those days. Packed with people and cafes, gigs, clubs, niche shops. Music scene for all genres was insane. Cinemas huge, and a massive variety of things that have since vanished. The whole place constantly buzzed with the sound of cars, taxis, people and life - day and night. All lit up with those old sodium vapour street lights - giving the city streets an iconic orange glow at night. It's a ghost town now, compared to then.
Sad to see how it's become. A sea of deliveroo riders, closed department stores, mobile phone repair shops, vape shops and Turkish barbers. Like every other major city/town in the UK.
John Street Jam! Sank a few pints in there in the 90’s. Man I’m getting old!🤣
Edit: I watched them build Buchanan Galleries from my college classroom and now i believe it’s due to be demolished and replaced with residential buildings.
The captions really detract from the quality of this film. It completely spoils the footage and makes the film inaccessible for people with visual or perceptual impairments. Please consider re-uploading with the tiktok style captions.
Glasgow seemed to peak around 1997-2004. Kinda got worse year on year since then, and it is back to the dump it was in the 70s and 80s. For that period between 1997-2004, it felt like a fashionable, metropolitan city, the cool alternative to the rather naff bland Edinburgh.
Back when people who had money went into the city centre to spend it. Now they all spend online, or out-of-town centres at the best. Leaving the city centre for beggars and refugees. Glasgow in 2024 reminds me of Johannesburg CBD when I visited in 1999 - an empty shell with economic activity displaced elsewhere.
