Have you ever tried hammock camping, or currently use one? What has been your experience so far, good or bad? Also, if you are a hammock camper, do you have any tips for me to improve my game? Let me know, I would love to hear about it!

I bought a "jungle hammock" many many decades ago for sleeping in the backyard.
One day went camping at a lake with 2 coworkers.
As the sun went down a thunderstorm rolled in. They turned the fishing boat over and set their sleeping bags underneath. They got soaked.
I set up the hammock, with waterproof canopy over it with attached mosquito netting. They were kinda pissed that I was prepared.

What I've realized after living in both the Southeast and West is that hammock camping has a "sweet spot" as far as climate goes. During warm weather, you can save a ton of pack weight with a hammock camping setup. In cold (I mean, really cold) conditions, I've found that my tent camping setup offers a bit more utility for the same weight.

65yo- 15 years hammocking all year round 😊
Mostly DD HAMMOCK for me, model depend ont the trip.
I do favor a mat instead of underquilt. A R rated one (4.4R)
Instead of the underquilt  I use a plastic sheet (100g, cover window from TESA) to block the wind and humidity from below.
I prefer to make a ridgline over the hammock and suspend my boots so I can grab them in the morning and warm the up 😊
In winter I use at least 2 warm bottle (platypus 1 liter filled with almost boiling water, last 8 hours  , one at my feet)
The bug net is very useful to block WIND so if windy use it !!
Enjoy the outdoors !

Greetings from the UK.
As a seasoned hammock camper myself, this is a great video for beginners with plenty of top tips.
I imported a Dutchware Chameleon hammock years ago, along with a few of their accessories.
It's a fantastic piece of kit.
I've used it from -17°C (1° Fahrenheit) here in the UK to the balmy jungles of Southern Mexico.
BTW, your figure-of-8 cordage management is known as 'hanking'.
Happy hammocking.

Been hammocking since the 80’s! I don’t think I can improve on your system. Sometimes I use a thick 10mm rope for the ridge line (if I’m bringing climbing rope anyway) so if a widowmaker comes down I have some protection. I’ve had Hennessy, surplus, and other systems. The tarps are never big enough if it’s raining hard. I always get a bigger tarp. Your tarp looks great with the doors!

One thing I learned the hard way, hammocking in the Olympic Mountain old growth forests, is that standard hammock straps are not long enough. You can extend them with tree huggers, though. I got some 15’ daisy chain ones from Dutcheare and they’ve served me well. Also, longer cord for you tarp is good was well.

Ive been hammock camping for about 4 years now, going out as often as i can, year round. I went to HangCon this year and picked up some 3D printed A-shaped clips that mount to the ridgeline, over the net, and they have a little hook shape on the bottom of each leg that can catch the underquilt suspension, achieving a similar affect to the extra shock cords suggested by another commenter.

Im organizing a group hang in Western NY for April.   Would love to get more folks out to the event.   The event is listed on the Dutchware hang map.

I've been a lover of hammocks for about 7 years or so now, maybe 8. I've been running a DD Frontline that whole time with a 10x10 multicam tarp. Finally this week decided to get a new hammock and got the travel bird skynest, should be arriving in the next few days. I have yet to get an underquilt but find that a good camping mat with a heavy sleeping bag and fleece liner will do me for 3 season comfort no problem, winter not so much just yet. That will be the next big purchase. It's a bit of a learning curve but once you get a feel for how to get comfy it's so nice. For anyone debating getting one, do it... You won't regret it. Can't speak for other brands but my DD has seen some hard use and has held up great. I've used it for military exercises and roll in and out in full battle gear and never ripped or tore anything. Excited to try out the new one, should be a bit of a simpler/quicker setup

This is such a useful video!! took so many notes. feeling very prepared now.

Thanks for showing off your setup, very good information about hammock camping! This feels like the good old youtube. :hand-purple-blue-peace::goat-turquoise-white-horns:

Great tip for closing the doors on your tarp.

I Hammock camp in and around Vietnam. If you ever find yourself this way leet me know. My channel is new but I love Hammock camping.

Great Video. Thank you for all the tips and useful information. I definitely need a winter tarp after seeing your demo. I've been limping along with a rain tarp this winter. Being able to close the ends is a game changer for me.

I have a closed cell sit pad that I put under my hammock at night and then use to stand on when I have to exit. Helps putting shoes on without getting socks wet too.

Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge!

The tip about pulling some of the hammock over the edge of the quilt before sitting is super solid. I was out recently and went to sit in my hammock, but instead ended up flipping backwards. Luckily, I was able to grab hold of the hammock and just ended up hanging upside down by my knees instead of bashing my head against the rocky ground beneath me.

All excellent suggestions, sir.  I’ve seen a lot of how-to videos presented by people who should be watching presentations like yours, not dispensing advice.  Thanks for the video.

I just went on a solo camping trip in Saaremaaa and used the One Wind hammock with rain/wind trap and underquilt. Didn’t need no books or anything. Just spend like 3h in my home trying to figure out how to set up everything and everything was ready when I went camping. Didn’t have any issues at all. Even figure out how to use wind tarp on the go. Har a blast!

Good vid! I love my hammock gear stuff! Great company as well

Love the Pro Tip:  Earplugs to calm the anxiety hahaha.  Forests make all sorts of creepy noises at night.

Fantastic!
 Thank you so much 👍
