I finally got tired of hand-tamping everything, so I bought a $500 VEVOR plate compactor straight from China.
This is a gas-powered 196cc plate compactor with a Honda-clone engine, and in this video I unbox it, put it together, add oil and fuel, and see if the thing will actually start and run.
I bought it for a landscaping project behind my house, where I’ve got a lot of compacting to do. Renting one can easily run around $70–$100 per use, so the theory is that after roughly five uses, this thing has paid for itself. Assuming it doesn't grenade itself before then.
I also go over the initial setup, oil fill, first startup, packaging, and my first impressions of the VEVOR plate compactor. As usual, this is less of a professional equipment review and more of a regular guy buying something off Amazon and finding out if it actually does what I need it to do.
If you're considering buying a cheap gas plate compactor for landscaping, pavers, gravel, road crush, soil, or other DIY projects, hopefully this gives you a better idea of what you're getting for the money.
Now I just need to see how long it lasts.
