If a device doesnt support homeassistant, I will not buy it. If some feature is locked and cannot be accessible locally, I will skip it.

I went down the Shelly and Ikea route. Every smart device has a physical button or remote to operate. I don't need WiFI, internet or even a phone, just my finger, to make it work. Automatons run locally.

I was bitten by Belkin shutting down WEMO. Now I buy mainly IKEA stuff with Homey Pro Mini and my Apple TV as joint admins for everything I can.

Never rely on a company that storing your data cuz at a moment's notice everything can go dark just like that. That's why your best bet is something open source where everything is integrated locally and you have no reliance on any manufacturer whatsoever. This is why I have switched everything over to home assistant

Any devices requireing a server in the cloud is not a smarthome-device. They need to be local.

Never trust any company to run your home. Make sure everything can run locally. Open is a minimum requirement.

This is why I still use X-10 switches and modules. They are not dependent on any Internet connection.

I've had Insteon devices installed in my home since 2013. They are all locally controlled through a hub sold by Universal Devices. I have over 50 devices installed, all of which work independently of the cloud, which is the very reason I chose the tech in the first place.

I had an ABB inverter. On one hand, it was good because it allowed local access. You could see a lot of engineering details and you had some control. On the other hand a lot of control required an admin password that disappeared into the installation company (they were useless) and ABB itself had abysmal service. The worst bit was that the wifi access details were under admin permission, so I couldn't change my wifi password for years, even when I got a new router.

I don't know how people haven't realized this yet, after how many different incidents across such a variety of markets, but something people need to understand is this:

There is no such thing as "the cloud."
"The cloud," does not exist.
It's just someone else's computer.

I started my smart home journey with a pair of Tuya plugs, and HA on a Pi 4. I now have several dozen fully offline devices, and those Tuya plugs are long gone. I've even gone so far as to isolate all my wifi IOT devices on their own network. They can only access the internet if I want them to.

I've always made it a point to not use devices that require internet to work. Using them doesn't give you a smart home, it just quietly enrolls you into a fallible ecosystem.

It should be law that if you sold customers hardware you must provide the ability for it to be used indefinitely. If it requires servers, you need to release enough software documentation for people to reverse engineer usability if you shut those servers down

There needs to be more consumer education. When a device requires a cloud or an online account for setup or operation there should be a mandatory warning sticker on the packaging. Ideally companies should be required by law to provide a solution for local control.
