Did you ever own a fake stereo system?

Even Pioneer created fake stereo systems where it would seem like one had multiple separate components, but in fact, it was an all-in-one system with a fake front facade.

The ‘Mug’s Eyeful’ was coined by Alan Sugar who founded Amstrad; a company renowned for blighting the UK with cheap, badly made electronics dressed up to imitate more expensive products.

He once described his products as being ‘For the truck driver, and his wife’. Quite an assumption that a truck driver can’t also be an audiophile 😂

Back in 1986 as a 13 year old I was rocking the GPX sound system

I would want to say that over 90% of the people watching this vividly remember these "rack" systems from the BPC [Black Plastic Crap] era. These stereo systems were so prevalent in the 80s and 90s; virtually anyone who considered themselves a "music person" or liked to throw parties all the time had one where I grew up (I didn't grow up in the more affluent areas where people had real gear). They were in the Circuit City and Service Merchandise catalogs advertising for hundreds of dollars, which back then was a duke's ransom. The rack systems I would see most often were the Soundesign systems with the occasional Pilot stereo here and there (my sister had a white Soundesign stereo; it was incredibly weak-sounding). If you had a Pioneer or Sony rack system at home, you were the king of the neighborhood - everyone wanted to bring over their tapes or cds to hear it on the "big stereo". I was coming of age in the late 80s/early 90s, so I would peruse those Circuit City ads and make a mental wish list. The Pioneer/Sony/Kenwood/Sharp systems were impressive, but the Carver gear was the holy grail. It is quite embarrassing to think that some plastic molded shell with cardboard backing, speakers made of particle board with RCA connectors and cheap, IC amplifiers was a real stereo. It wasn't until I started noticing people tossing out their old school 70's receivers and speakers and comparing their build quality (and noticing how much heavier they were) that my attention shifted to [real] separates.

I remember claims of 500 watts per channel or more ... You'd be lucky if you actually got 5 watts RMS. 😅

Yep! And i still have it in a place of honor, right next to my TV. I was 14 years old and my mom bought me a Yorx M2500 system and a Magnavox FD1041 CD player. Hours and hours and hours and hours of fun out of it. I loved those days. 1986.

I bought an LXI from Sears in 1988 for about $500.00.  It was everything you described.

The semi automatic turntable had what I believe was a genuine Chuo-Denshi cartridge.

It had an analog radio tuner, but a digital display, single CD player, dual cassette deck, and auxiliary input.

It sounded great!  I loved it.

I had it until a few years ago when I gave it to some church friends who had no stereo.  It’s okay because I still have four.

As an aside, my wife still has the York that her brother bought her for nursing school graduation in 1990.

I would not call them "fake stereos". They play in stereo therefore they are not fake. To me "fake" is when something or someone claims they do things they cannot do - like when some 1960's tape recorders claimed they could play in stereo, but it turned out you needed to buy a special stereo amplifier to play in stereo as the machine itself was mono.
I don't either consider it "fake" that they have buzzwords 'splattered' all over them.  To me that is just "flashy 80's style", somewhat like when people put alloy rims (or silver painted steel rims) on a cheap car.
I consider them "budget stereos" or "cheap stereos" - in Denmark they were sometimes called "mail order stereos" because in the 1980's there was a mail order catalog distributed nationwide where those stereos were amongst the things you could order. I never had one myself, I bought a second hand ITT receiver and a Technics record player, but I knew a lot of people, old and young, who had these budget stereos. Most people were happy with them because they were primarily used for background music. The people who wanted loud music or better sound would typically buy a more expensive system.

Here in the UK, we had AMSTRAD stereos - produced by Alan Sugar (who appears these days in the UK version of "The Apprentice")....

No single brand made the best of everything. Buying it one piece at a time was part of the fun. And you could upgrade piece by piece if you liked. I've never had an All-in-One.

I remember fake stereo ,but it was in MFI in the UK. Furniture store. Used as display on the furniture  ,to help sell the furniture.
No working features no power supply.

I had an Emerson integrated system back in the mid 80s. AM/FM, Dual cassette, phono, and 10 band graphic EQ with bookshelf speakers with 1-way 5" drivers. I think it was a little over $100 at K-Mart and was a birthday present that I picked out at the store. I loved that system until the pre-amp went out about 2 years in. In the early 90s, when I was in college, my family bought a high-end integrated system for the living room to replace the giant console from the 70s. It was a 100 Watt Fisher system with phono, AM/FM, dual cassette, EQ, and a 5-disc CD changer in a wood cabinet with glass door. It had big 3-way tower speakers with 12" woofers and proper crossovers. It also had the fake bottom feet below each "component". It was a great system and lasted a long time, not sure what happened to it.

2:50 My first stereo system as a teenager (just over $200 back then) back in 1984 or 1985 was a Yorx Q100 all-in-one system with belt-drive record player, AM/FM tuner, double cassette deck, two "tower speakers" with only one 5 inch driver in each speaker, and what looked to be a graphic equalizer in the box art, but turned out to be a graphic equalizer-like illustration on a storage door with the storage area being for cassette tapes, 45 rpm adapters, etc.

Yeah, I was bamboozled by the fake EQ, but I still enjoyed the system for many years despite it being a low-fi system when push came to shove. I eventually tossed that Yorx stereo onto the curb, but for some odd reason, I kept the record player lid. Haha! :)

I remember those days very well. Some of the systems were beyond junk.

I had a Quasar stereo that looked like a rack system. It had a tape player on the bottom, tuner on top and the receiver/eq in the middle.  I hooked up my kenwood cd player, rca vcr, and my zenith 19" tv. My TV had only a headphone out and no rca outs. So I used a headphone to rca out adapter to get stereo.🤣 High school in the 90s was awesome.

Lately I have been rescuing some of these types of cheaper systems from Goodwill stores or other thrift outlets and trying to bring them back to life. Keeps me busy. I have had a General Electric, a JCPenney with 8 track player, a Fisher, a Sears “SR”, and a Realistic Modulaire which had so much wrong with the CD player and cassettes that only the radio and turntable still works well. 😊

Even as a kid I was amazed that people fell for this.

I remember lots of those fake knockoff stereo systems or we called them clones, since they do really work, but they’re imitators! I saw Service Merchandise and Kohls would have those Sound Design and Emerson that looked bigger than they need to be. But they were sold for steep discounts since many consumers would rather buy a better brand for not much more money. I still see them for really cheap at thrift stores.
