Love doesn't always last. Not with people. Not with movies.

Some films you fall for hard — you defend them, put them on lists, make other people watch them. And then one day you sit down with them again and something's just... different. The movie hasn't changed. You have.

Tonight, ten movies I used to love that I can't love the same way anymore. Some are soft reversals — I still like them fine, I'll say so. A couple I genuinely don't enjoy anymore. And the last one on this list isn't really about the film at all.

It's about becoming a father.

I want YOUR list — not the safe answer, not the one you think sounds smart. The movie you actually used to love and can't go back to the same way.
Drop it below. I'm reading every single one. 👇

Thank you, Chase for saying that you don’t judge past movies by current standards! So refreshing to hear

Mentioning Sixteen Candles reminds of an older cousin calling Sixteen Candles " Damn nearly a documentary! A sixteen year old girl pouting and expecting everyone to know what's wrong and punishing the world for it." He continued with " alot of them never out grow this, never stay with one of those." That advice worked for me and he just had his 50th weddings Anniversary.

Dumb and Dumb is dumb. But it holds up thanks to its heart, with the sweetness and quality of the actors and music

" St. Elmo's Fire" - I liked it in the theater, and couldn't finish it ten years later.

Spielberg himself said, over 30 years ago, that he’d never end ‘Close Encounters…’ the way he did because he became a father afterward. Thankfully, he didn’t go back and re-cut it to how his new-found emotions affect his filmmaking. Movies, I feel, are of the time they are made. They are of the time of the filmmakers and they are of the time of the audiences. Don’t go back and mess with that as it should be just as precious to those who made the films as those who experienced them.

"A.V.A., you're giving me the 'it's not you, it's me' routine? I invented 'it's not you, it's me'. Nobody tells me it's them, not me. If it's anybody, it's me." -- George Costanza

American Beauty is one I just don’t care for watching anymore. It’s just to depressing and dark for me at my age and where my life is. Especially with the Kevin Spacey news :-/.

I was 15 when Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was released in theaters. I knew it was stupid at the time, and was kind of embarrassed to love it. I kept saying to myself, "What an asshole." But I'm not embarrassed anymore.

I saw Close Encounters in the theater when it came out. It was mind blowing. I’ll always love it, whether it ages well or not.

I feel that the problem in today’s day in age is when streaming services make these edits to movies, whenever they change a line instead of keeping the original line in the movie, or even with kids movies where they remove a scene in a movie with adult humor because they claim it’s too inappropriate for kids to watch today, which is something you’ve seen with Toy Story 2 where they would remove the during credits outtake of the prospector flirting with Barbie dolls. That was supposed to be adult humor kids are not supposed to get that joke.

Nothing I “loved” that I dislike now. My tastes haven’t really changed. Plenty of mediocre films that I have enjoyed over the years but I was never under the illusion that they were anything more than guilty pleasures

I take exception to 16 Candles. If you were a teen in the 1980's this movie captures the vibe and feeling of the time. You feeling this way about it is just like how I feel about the "Beach Blanket Bingo" movies of the 1960's. They seem silly and not true to life to me, but I bet they capture something that people who lived through it felt.

The thing with Close Encounters is that if you changed the movie so that Roy stays with his family, then the entire movie has no point to it. While having children is obviously a life-changing experience, something would have to happen to Roy that would be even bigger to get him to simply walk away. I'd say for him, that's exactly what happened. It IS about perspective. Maybe you would not have done what he did. But HE did it. That was his calling and he followed it to HIS logical conclusion.

Gotta agree with Ghostbusters. I've watched Ghostbusters 1 and 2 many times, afterlife a couple times, but Frozen Empire only once. The 2016 one I have never watched and probably never will.

You lost me at Dumb & Dumber.
I loved it as an immature teenager and I still love it as an immature middle aged man.

I saw close encounters at the US150 in Seattle as a kid. Lines were around the block at wa different theaters within a quarter mile of each other. People everywhere for hours just waiting in line. No reserved seating. My brother and I loved it so much we saw it immediately again. Flash forward and I a, 57 with 6 grown children. The movie doesn’t not suddenly hit me differently as an adult just because we had kids. Roy’s detachment from his family was simply magnified by the sudden realization that there is more out there than misery in a bad marriage upon his first encounter. By the time he is obsessed with the landing site via implanted memories, the only thoughts he has is to find the truth. He even tried to talk his wife into therapy and she wouldn’t do it. They were done. Along comes someone who has had the same experience deeply feeling attached to her by that experience. But even she cannot leave without her child because of the mother /child bond. The truth for Roy is on that ship, so he takes the leap. Not in spite of his family, but because of his family and the fact he has to prove what they would not believe he told them happened.

Soon, he's going to say that Rod serlings' traditional Twilight Zone was a show he liked but doesn't anymore. lol it's one of the best anthology series ever that also inspired a lot of films and shows
