OH, marvelous. Next week the Hannah Arendt Center's Virtual Reading Group (meets online on Friday's at 1:00 Eastern time) will hear Roger Berkowitz, the Center's Founder and Academic Director (who writes often for the Center's Amor Mundi letter) offer a recap of the first section of Arendt's 2nd volume of the Life of The Mind which is on WILL and Judgement.

00:12 Nietzsche's concept of "will to power" is often oversimplified; it requires deeper understanding.

01:44 A philosophical approach must question certainties, especially regarding the nature of the will.

02:13 "Will to power" signifies a complex relationship rather than a straightforward desire for dominance.

04:05 Nietzsche critiques Schopenhauer's oversimplified notion of the will, emphasizing its complexity.

06:39 Schopenhauer's will concept reduces all existence to a singular drive, which Nietzsche rejects.

07:46 Nietzsche's "will to power" redefines the notion of will, centering it within a relational framework.

10:27 Nietzsche’s relativism is often misunderstood; it’s not about subjective truth but relative interpretations.

11:38 Will to power is inherently interpretive, varying greatly between individuals and situations.

13:28 Nietzsche views passions and affects as different aspects of will, revealing personal truths.

20:02 Passion is linked to self-organization and clarity, whereas affect often leads to a loss of self.

21:38 Nietzsche appreciates passion as a constructive force, organizing the self rather than dispersing it.

23:10 Nietzsche’s philosophy emphasizes the diversity of will's expressions, rejecting a singular notion.

24:07 Nze’s perspective exposes issues through conflict, highlighting the complexity of philosophical thought.

24:34  Nze's intentional exaggeration helps differentiate his ideas, yet readers must avoid oversimplifying his opinions.

25:43 Nze acknowledges multiple truths in an issue, reflecting a broader philosophical mindset that extends beyond a single perspective.

26:10  Philosophers must push language's limits to express complex thoughts, revealing deeper meanings behind seemingly contradictory statements.

29:10 Willing is a process that brings one's true self into light, allowing personal mastery and growth.

30:06 The pursuit of power transforms the self and creates a new version of one’s identity through the act of willing.

33:31  Will to power is inherently relational, as it reflects one's perspective and growth through the act of willing.

37:19 Nze identifies the connection between feeling, thinking, and willing, asserting that all worldviews are shaped by the will.

40:25 Engaging in the will to power opens new avenues of understanding, contrasting with static interpretations of truth.

46:10 Art exemplifies the will to power, serving as a creative process where the artist not only creates but also defines their own identity through creation.

48:11 Art provides insight into the will to power, embodying creation and self-affirmation.

48:24 There is no singular artistic goal; understanding art relies on knowing the artist's intentions.

49:05 Nietzsche sees art as a counter to nihilism, affirming the sensuous world over Platonic ideals.

50:40 Nietzsche views art as a vital stimulus to life, contrary to Schopenhauer’s perception of it as a sedative.

51:21 Art is a significant manifestation of the will to power, enriching both the artist and the audience.

53:24 Greek tragedy, rather than leading to resignation, was viewed by Nietzsche as a source of vitality for the Athenian people.

54:26 The state of artistic rapture allows the artist to transcend themselves and engage with a broader vision.

56:40 Nietzsche critiques the Platonic notion of a single truth, advocating for a plurality of truths that reflect different contexts.

57:08  Socratic emphasis on absolute truth potentially diminishes the richness of artistic and lived experience.

01:02:06 Truth should not be seen as an unchanging essence, as it evolves within specific contexts and human experiences.

01:08:31  The "death of God" represents a shift in values linked to a critique of the eternal truth derived from Platonic ideals.

01:10:23  True philosophical thinking requires moving beyond Platonic structures to overcome nihilism and embrace genuine existence.

01:11:20 Nietzsche’s final creative year marked a departure from Platonism, leading to madness and a new understanding of the “true world.”

01:12:00 Heidegger connects the evolution of Platonism to different philosophers, culminating in a transformation of humanity depicted in Nietzsche's work.

01:13:11 ‍ The end of Platonism raises questions about humanity's future: will it lead to the "last man" or the emergence of the "overman"?

01:14:05 Nietzsche’s concept of the "will to power" reflects the nature of being, where life itself embodies creativity, akin to art.

01:15:26 The "last man" is a product of nihilism, indicating a deficiency in will and a failure to transcend beyond mere existence.

01:16:56 Nietzsche's challenge is to overthrow Platonism while maintaining an understanding of being, risking descent into chaos without anchor.

01:19:11 Heidegger leaves open the question of whether Nietzsche’s madness was a result of trying to escape Platonism or merely inverting it.

01:21:37 Heidegger concludes that Nietzsche’s definition of being as "will to power" leads to an exploration of perspectivism in understanding existence.

01:25:11 Both Nietzsche and Heidegger see all beings as perspectival, challenging the notion that the inorganic world exists as purely mechanistic.

01:27:02 Nietzsche posits semblance as reality, suggesting that what we perceive is defined by the "will to power," blending art and existence.

01:29:36 Truth is viewed as an interpretation of reality that is necessary for survival, though often represents mere semblance rather than fixed essence.

01:30:30 Truth and knowledge are intertwined with art; both depend on the perspective and interpretation shaped by the will to power.

01:32:47 The “overman” embodies a new understanding of being through creative knowledge, elevating the role of art in perceiving truth.

Not sure if you've heard of 'Unsolicited Advice,' but he gave you a shoutout at 16:46 of 'One Star Reviews of Classic Books (but they have a point).' Could be cool to see you guys in conversation if there's any way to make that happen! Might be an opportunity to reach a more general audience an dispel some common misconceptions

We need an Untimely Reflection!

Banger video Mr salts

Loving your podcast .

32:24 this is very important. I should make notes about it later.

A question for everybody in the comments section, please.
If we were to change the word Will, which word or phrase would you use?

I really like this episode. I see why heidegger is often mentioned when talking about Nietzsche.

You are the only good philosophy channel on channel.

28:50 In willing we bring ourselves to light, it is a light only kindled by willing... willing always brings the self to itself, it therefore finds itself beyond itself.

another banger, Salty One!!... but you're makin' me wait too long til my next hit... i get the shakes... bugs crawlin' all over my skin... i descend into a dark abyss of anticipation... have you no pity, thou Nietzschean Zarathustrian sage?!

In Creation, that which propels us, that which we endure for our passio?

You seem to post great stuff on your page!
