Roy Keane’s infamous Saipan rant is one of the most iconic moments in football history. In this video, we revisit the legendary bust-up between Keano and then-Ireland manager Mick McCarthy ahead of the 2002 World Cup. Roy opens up about his elite mentality, the shocking lack of professionalism, and why he simply couldn’t tolerate low standards in a team representing the nation.

The Big D breaks it down like only he can, with brutal honesty, humour, and real insight into what really triggered Keane’s explosive reaction. Was it just about training facilities and preparation? Or was it a deeper clash of values — between a winner and a bluffer?

Keane’s no-compromise attitude reveals everything you need to know about his greatness. In this episode, we explore how the Saipan incident shaped his legacy, exposed deeper problems in Irish football, and whether or not he was actually… right all along.

If you’re a Manchester United fan, a Roy Keane fan, or just love football drama at its peak, don’t miss this one.

Was Roy Keane out of order in Saipan?

@Orillionn 10 months ago

Duff and Robbie Keane were top players in that Ireland team too TBF...

@brians1902 1 month ago

Regardless who was right or wrong, Roy was our only international class player back then. Mick should of done whatever he needed to do to keep him.

Roy was out of order going to the press and Mick was wrong to call that meeting. The two of them should have just had it out in a room somewhere. Anyone who lives /works in Ireland can tell you how useless we are at management. It's basically called "winging it"

Apparently Roy had told Alex Ferguson that he was going to the 2002 World Cup to "win it" with Ireland, so to arrive on the island of Saipan and see those shit conditions, you can understand Roy's annoyance. However, if I was in Roy's shoes, I would have just swallowed my pride, kept my mouth shut and just got on with it and wait until the world cup was over and I was back home..........and THEN explode like a volcano and give the whole lot of them HELL.

Keano 🇮🇪 #Legend

We could have made the semis with keano, but it was no surprise. It was personal,keano and Mick didn't get on. I agree with roy on many points,The fair has always been shambolic and crooked but the conflict was completely manufactured. Ultimately,he let his teammates,the fans,and his country down. I agree that a lot of Irish supporters back then were ole,ole-ers,men in plastic hats,to quote Eamonn dunphy, but people did pay money they couldn't afford,to go to Japan, flying in to the news that our best player was flying home. For that,I can never really forgive him,not that my opinion would affect keano.

Interesting watching the movie, Saipan, I never knew that. Right at the end, the day before the Cameroon match …
McCarthy rings Keane and opens the door. Asked him back. I think Roy engineered it all because he wanted a way out. He was asked twice to come back. We were beaten on penalties in the quarters by Spain. Germany was next, and we’d already beaten them. That was our chance. Roy could have played … but chose not to.

People really need to understand the kind of no nonsense character roy was an still is tbh! He will always speak his mind an when hes pissed off you better watch out!
At the end of the day mick McCartney was a muppet an the ireland team was being took the piss out of an roy clearly thought as captain it was his duty to step up an say something! Ok it maybe got out of hand but thats life an when 2 people dont get on these things happen!

Im 💯 percent with roy an id have done the same!

ROI WERE GREAT IN THE WORLD CUP UNDER JACK CHARLTON

@williamharrison7797 10 months ago

I understand Roy's reaction, but football is a team game, so maybe he could have stayed and tried to crack on for the team and country's sake.

@gerardkearney7601 5 months ago

Describing that ireland team as a pub team is a joke. You haven't a notion.

In another time Ireland won the world cup with Roy

@babylongigolo 10 months ago

Word ‘hilarious’ doing a lot of heavy lifting in this title.

@jmurphy3350 10 months ago

There wouldn’t have been a meeting if Roy hadn’t talked to two reporters to rant about a training camp in Saipan. He still thinks he’s right years later. He’d have retired from utd if he’d have kept his mouth shut there too.
