I think there has been inconsistency and controversy in every game but people only point and yell when it goes the way of the bigger team and especially when it is Argentina
I think bias exists in football, but it depends on the timing and the organizers, and a particular team doesn't always benefit. People always talk about Real Madrid with special privileges, but they are sometimes treated unfairly. Remember the one wheer Bellingham made the cross and te ref blew the whistle while the ball was in midair and the goal was disallowed for "running out of time"? There's talk about Portugal escaping defeat thanks to a VAR check against Croatia this time. But the question is: Why was Croatia allowed to play until the 17th minute of added time? The disallowed goal came in the 15th minute of added time.
I've watched football before and seen that Argentina isn't immune to this either. At the 1998 World Cup, when a light touch on Simeone resulted in a red card for Beckham, Ortega's provocative headbutt against Van Der Saar also resulted in a rather heavy red card for Ortega.
Back to this match, leading 2-0 in the 67th minute in an open game, in my opinion, wasn't a difficult margin to overcome. Considering at least 10 minutes of injury time, the total time it took for Argentina to score two goals was almost an entire half.
Argentina didn't have the third goal in 90 minutes in mind; they just wanted a draw. However, Egypt's system collapsed, and I think if they had played an extra 5 minutes, Argentina would have scored a fourth goal.
Egypt's second goal should have been allowed or, ideally, the referee should have blown the whistle immediately after the foul. However, the problem here isn't with the referee, as he initially accepted it, but the VAR office called him onto the pitch and canceled it. It certainly wasn't a penalty for Salah, as he lost possession and tripped Arg defender.
If Egypt's goal had been counted, would it have meant they were leading Argentina 3-0? Unfortunately, football doesn't work that way. If the second goal had been counted, Egypt might not have scored a third, and Argentina might have fought back earlier. In football, you can't predict absolute situations. And against a different team, a lead in the 10th minute would have been enough to cause Argentina heartbreak. But Egypt simply couldn't handle the pressure.
Great watch as always 👊🏿 I think you always hit the nail on the head. It's similar to the whole debates in club football. It's not a case of rigging but more just a case of inconsistent ref decisions is all. And yeah unfortunately those inconsistent calls will naturally favor big teams more in the long run and that's just human nature unfortunately. So yeah hopefully in the future those "grey area" calls don't lean to the big teams but it's not something we will ever be able to control. I myself support a club that has benefited from such (Real Madrid) and we've benefited way more than we have been screwed over so I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't recognise that privilege.
I will say this: I have seen experts say that a red should have been given for that Messi foul. Personally, my view is similar to yours though. The intensity is not there and he pulls out immediately which is why a yellow would have been sufficient. But I do think that in this instance, the fact that it's Messi and all the circumstances surrounding it (his last world cup etc.) does have an underlying influence. However, stars being more protected has been the case in every sport for decades and even in football it is obviously not an exclusive right that Messi enjoys. In fact, before this tournament even started there was a similar controversy surrounding Ronaldo who should have received a ban for the first 1-2 games of this WC but since it is him, an exception was made. We could go on and on about this but it's simply not worth engaging with these conspiracies since, at the end of the day, it's mostly just people with certain agendas voicing their frustrations.
Nice video. I do think you're missing a little context for the "favoritism" during the Egypt match. Argentina overwhelmingly had possession compared to the counter-attacking style Egypt was playing. It only makes sense that there would be more fouls called for Argentina since they had most of the possession. As far as the fouls that weren't called, there's a lot of examples on both sides, but it does seem to be consistent with the reffing style of the "sigue sigue" we've seen all tournament across all teams
As someone who is half scottish and half brazillian i’m torn on this situation. One one hand argentina winning is good because the chance of them getting to the semi final and potentially putting england out is beautiful in my eyes. On the other hand i am gutted that argentina went through as i do think they have a good chance of winning the whole thing which puts them a bit close for comfort to brazils 5 world cups. I do think there has been some bias towards the argentinian team in this world cup, for example the messi and algeria incident i think should have been a red card or at least a yellow, and the “foul” which led to egypt’s second goal was never a foul and never should have been disallowed. However i do not think it’s rigged and i don’t think people should take anything away from the comeback that was made, which by the way for me shows the difference between argentina and brasil at the moment. the argentinian team are willing to die for the shirt and do anything whereas the brazillian team stroll and think they have the right to win it because they play for the 5 time champions. Allez les bleus 🇫🇷
There is a reluctance to make Argentina leave the competition. I would not call that an agenda. I believe there is passive bias in favor of Argentina by a lot of people in football because they actually like Messi. The referee was actually pretty good most of the game. The Cape Verde match was not a robbery, either, obviously. When people say that there is bias, Infantino is the real person creating that perception. He is a terrible FIFA president who barely hides his emotions and has a lot of shady deals in his resume. This is NOT 1978. Also, Ronaldo leaving the competition makes people more hopeful and aggressive about that Messi can't get a second World Cup, which would kill the competition between them. This is a perfect storm created by a bunch of situations and narratives that came together at the right time.
Great video Renk, in the netherlands there is a massive victim mentality against argentina with people still upset with the 2022 qf exit which along with the absolute shitshow social media has made footballing discussion and discussions in general on a larger scale. Has made everyone anti-argentine in this country. What i often find funny are the amount of people preaching this stuff and their normal disinterest in football. Again a lot of people who are not interested in football watch the world cup and a lot of them think they the sport because they saw 2 games and now know the laws of the game and these are also alot of the people that scream the laudest about "rigging".
Referees deserve more respect and sympathy. People including Trump pretend to be experts. I was disappointed Mamdani joined the agenda too. Also I disagree with the criticism of "inconsistent" refereeing, it's too vague.
Fun fact: Argentina got the most booking (17 yellow cards) in the 2022 world cup. Also, the yellow card distribution has dropped significantly with 2.70 per match compared to 3.55 in 2022.
Did Argentina get favoured? yes like most big teams get , especially in the huge European leagues like the premier league and La Liga Were the calls wrong? they were absolutely not lol even the Martinez one for me was very blatant coz its clear the defender intended his contact to make Martinez fall over, as soft as it was. However the huge call that was missed was the slap from paredes or taglifico in the first half.
Now Messi foul vs Algeria? is a big miss call and should have been a yellow, as he did pull back his leg and did not follow through Balogun's was reckless and even unintentional, he could have ended that bosnian player's career( i am not usually a mean perso wishing ill but its definitely a dose of karma when they got the suspension rescinded and they get blown out the next game with their captain sustaining a leg injury) But back to the messi stamp, before that game, there was at least 2 occasions where a similar foul done that did not get any card given(scotland vs haiti and in the morocco game where Hakimi does a much rash version on Vini that did not get called)
Is the competition rigged intheir favour? No its not, did Italy rig the 2006 world cup and did Spain rig the 2010 one? Seems this only seems to come after Messi won the cups and this agenda by a certain section of fans was pushed.
Pushing the narrative all of them are the same( ie every argentine is xenophobic, racist and zionist) Algorithms are to blame for pushing this narrative The Argentina fan carrying the Israel flag and mocking the Egyptian coaches get 10k upvotes but the pictures of the argentina fans and Jordanian fans holding the palestine flag gets almost a 100 upvotes at most and no comments. The algorithms work to make want people want to see, so misbehaving Argentine racist fans get plastered everywhere while the ones of them being nice or fun are not gone viral. I legit just saw a fan fight video where an Egyptian fan attacks an Argentina fan(kicking a woman) and it gets deleted within 2 hours for showing no context Djed Spence's jaw was broken by Liam Delap in a prem game by a vicious elbow that was not even punished by the narratives pushed on social media expect me to believe the slaps from Paraguay and Argentina or the south American teams are vicious as that lol Many of the fans behavior(and enzo) are warranted to be called out but the criticism for Argentina in general seem to come from a place of xenophobia thats disturbing for me. I only seen regular Russian citizens get this much unwarranted hate for something they did not do directly
Hypocrisy of Past Actions People called out Maradona's hand of god but blatantly ignore all the rough fouls the had to endure in this tournament(look at his belgium goal were the defender swings at his leg so hard that he almost falls over) In the same tournament Belgium gets 3 suspiciously offside looking goals not chalked off against the USSR 1982 Austrians and Germans conspiring to eliminate Algeria Harald Schmacher almost breaking the French defender's neck 2006 Battle of Nuremberg was between two European teams and suprise suprise one of the is the Dutch team but ofc the narratives are only Uruguay and other south american teams play rough
2010 The revision of the dutch team being the lesser of two evils vs spain. Spain would away with very tiny fouls that the ref cannot spot and simulate just enough for calls to go in their favour
The dutch played a very similar dirty style but had de jong van bommel go in with hard dirty tackles that got missed. Prior to the final, the dutch were only given one yellow card and it was for van bommel for dissent. So did FIFA rig it for the Dutch or did the Dutch very smartly employ fouls in ways the refs did not see?
I'm not an Argentina fan or Messi fan, but about the argument that the draw was rigged, I think that's stupid The draw seemed easy on paper because they played no big names, but football is not decided on names and on paper None of Argentina's opponents had anything to lose and that doesn't make things easy If FIFA genuinely tried to rig it, Ro32 would have been Argentina vs Uruguay
The majority of people have a victim mindset. So when they engage with football, they simply express their usual attitude in the football context. Losers always tend to have the biggest mouths, because they can't accept their inadequacy, so they compensate with noise.
FIFA = Fixed it for Argentina. Wondering if the roles were reversed, would there be the same redemption? I’m going w/a NO. The article about Miami. A lot of shady shit being reported on 🇦🇷💀
I actually really like and support your channel Renk! You're very authentic!
However, why is it many Argentinians are having to explain themselves how this WC continues to be fair. Why are people saying this is about Messi vs Ronaldo fans? Its not about fans who worship these humans like Gods, its just about what the eye sees.
You have Infantino accepting a political leader overturning a redcard decision.
Can someone explain to me why:
How Argentina an average gets a yellow card every 22 fouls when the average team is about 10 fouls per yellow card?
Messi's foul on Mandi wasn't even reviewed by VAR?
Why Messi was allowed to tame a freekick against Cabo Verde when the referee didn't blow his whistle yet?
Why was a slap to Ashour's face, right next to the linesmen not reviewed? But Egypt's second goal was disallowed minutes after it happened (which was the correct call by the way!)
However, how was it that this goal was only disallowed when Messi starting speaking to the linesmen?
How was Embolo the first player in the Argentina-Switzerland game to get a yellow card? How was it after all those Argentinian fouls that Argentina's first yellow card in that game came in the 96th odd minute?
Is the World Cup rigged for Argentina?
