Jojo Mayer is one of the PREMIER drummers on the scene. His original project NERVE took on new horizons as they sought to recreate a digital, sampled song form with real instruments in real time. And now he has a new project called ME/MACHINE which is an adventure in which human performance and the archaic power of drums interact with state-of-the-art generative music technology in real time. It's wild. Let's take a look at Jojo Mayer's drumming, why it's so special, and what are some of his drumming super powers.

Oh damn. One of my favorite drummers. Kinda goes over my head, but he flows like water.

So I have personally met Jojo multiple times as I grew up in NY, he is absolutely incredible. I saw him in a venue the size of a master bedroom, he did a snare roll and used his foot as a dampener. He is a super cool dude! I have a bunch of sticks he gave me after his show too.

It's been a while since I've checked his stuff out. He's so great.

Back in the 90s I got to see Jojo play with the Screaming Headless Torsos, the Modern Drummer Festival, and a weekly residency with Nerve for an entire summer at a small venue in NYC. His playing was so astounding to see up close. Back then in the Nerve band, Tim Lefebvre played bass, and Takuya Nakamura played trumpet and synths/effects. Can’t remember who else was there. I think back then, some of Jojo’s drum n’ bass influences included Photek and Plug, especially Photek.

Jojo is in me. I watched him so often and practiced his stuff that it is ingrained in my playing.

He’s incredible talented drummer. Saw him with nerve at EDM music festival. It was fantastic. We had awesome spot in lawn seating. Had some of those inflatable couches in a shady spot, cooler full of summer shandy cans. It don’t get much better than that.

He's such a legend

I like the standard version of his bass drum pedal. That's all I wanted to say for the algorithm. 😁

That Gandalf comparison though 😂🤣😂

In the last clip, his cymbals were high because he was dealing with shoulder pain. At least, I think that was what I heard.

DJ Shadow is an ok choice, I would recommend Andy C, Ed Rush & Optical, and Black Sun Empire as a nice little DnB starter pack.

How have I never heard

Here’s a personal “Nerve” favorite. How Jojo plays with time the first couple of minutes is beautiful 👌🏻🤩

The drumming is great but honestly I think I like the programmed sound of jungle and drum and bass better - doing it live gives it a human feel that I think actually takes away from the impact of the music
