I mean, i don't blame the listener, everything sounded really, really bad. I'd feel really stupid after that, but i'd prefer feeling that way instead of me being cheated on.

She lies, misdirects, and refuses to just say something simple like I'm trying to work on a surprise for you. If I was the listener I would lose so much trust in her from now on.

If such a misunderstanding happens, why does she keep being cryptic? Just say that you're working on a surprise, without reveling the details.
Why keep acting as if she has smth to hide? She understands that even if the guy doesn't leave, she puts him thru all the stress and worries for an hour? Why?
The guy should be genuinely pissed off, for the way she treated him.

Well, if you think about it, it's a totally normal reaction if you hear what the listener heard, but deep down at least it was possible to explain and still give a super cute gift and gesture. <3
