Does Mark ever stop? No one puts out more motorbike YouTube vids than this young man surely?? Once you've owned a BMW you'll appreciate how well engineered they are. Heavy yes but built to last. Torquey old motor too and an ideal bike to take touring, not just down to the shops. Love the shaft drive and just look how clean and how well its aged in twenty years. I had an 1150 over 30 years ago and it's still on the road!
Had one in 2007, brilliant bike, even had a radio and CD player, did loads of miles on it and enjoyed every minute. Spoiled em now, the riding position has changed and itโs more sporty and I canโt ride one due to the dodgy knees shame because if I could Iโd have one.
Really loving your reviews mark. In fact, any time I want to know anything about a bike I put it in the search bar with your name and hope you've rode it! ๐
Beautiful bikes. I have had two from this era. Currently have a 2007 R1200ST. Same engine and drive train. My favourite bikes. Also had an R1200S. The RT was fabulous. The ST Has carried me home safely after a 2500klm road trip. Once did a 900+klm trip on my RT in a day. Refreshed at the end. The ST is good for a 500-550klm day but a bit more tiring.
If the ABS pump packs up on this model the 'warning brake failure' light comes on and can leave you with no brakes!!๐๐ Many have had the ABS disconnected. I wouldn't touch one. Nice review.
I love my 2014 version, but I initially wanted this model because of the great petrol tank with the design where you can strap additional luggage to it easily. They took a step back getting rid of that feature. That said, the updates far outweigh this negative. Getting parts for this bike is still very easy for it's age. Sometimes easier than the 2014 and often cheaper.
On the original R bike the jugs would cook your feet in the summer. On this bike the fairing shields you nicely. It still has the same side-to-side vibration and revving the engine torques you over to one side. All the weight is down low, so the bike feels VERY light when you start moving. The massive piston impulse literally hammers on the back tire, wearing it out prematurely. If you enjoy the old R bikes, you will love this one. The fairing really works well, and the adjustable windshield is awesome. The brakes are LINKED so hitting the front brake only also engages the back!
