"Do this once a month and your EV battery will last forever." "Always do this after charging." Some of these viral tips are right, some are half right, and at least one can hurt your battery. As a battery engineer, here's my verdict on the four I see most.
Tip 1: Charge to 100% regularly. Depends on chemistry. For LFP batteries, Tesla's owner's manual recommends keeping the charge limit at 100% even for daily use and fully charging to 100% at least once a week. The reason is accuracy. Your car can't measure charge directly; it estimates it. LFP's voltage curve is very flat through the middle, so the estimate drifts, and a full charge gives the battery management system a clear reset point. A 2024 study found LFP does degrade slightly faster with frequent full charges, but not enough to really matter. Nickel based packs don't need full charges for accuracy and usually have a lower recommended daily limit.
Tip 2: Let it balance. Mostly true. A pack is many cell groups, and they drift slightly apart, which can cost usable range. Almost all EVs use passive top balancing: the BMS bleeds a little energy from fuller groups through small resistors so the others catch up. It usually runs near the top of charge, roughly 80 to 100 percent and often 90 to 100, and works better at lower charging currents. So an occasional high, slow charge at home gives your BMS the chance to balance. Follow your manual for daily limits.
Tip 3: Drain it to zero to reset it. False. The "memory" idea comes from older nickel based batteries. Lithium ion EV packs don't need draining, and repeated deep discharges accelerate wear.
Tip 4: Don't let it sit at the extremes. True. Geotab's study of over 22,700 vehicles found wide daily use didn't meaningfully speed up wear, but degradation accelerated for cars spending more than 80 percent of their time at very high or very low charge. It's the habit, not the event.
What to actually do: know your battery chemistry, follow your owner's manual, and let the car charge slowly and fully once in a while.
