Writer and filmmaker *Nick Davis* joins Our City Tonight to discuss You Had to Be There*, a documentary exploring the remarkable 1972 Toronto production of *Godspell and the creative community that emerged from it.

Co-written with his wife and frequent collaborator, *Jane Mendelsohn**, the film revisits an extraordinary moment in Canadian entertainment history when a theatrical production brought together performers who would go on to influence North American comedy through *Second City*, *SCTV, and *Saturday Night Live*.

The idea for the documentary began taking shape after Davis read *Martin Short's memoir* and recognized that the Toronto production represented something much larger than an unlikely gathering of future stars.

In this conversation, Davis discusses the origins of the documentary, the remarkable talent associated with that production, and how a creative community formed in Toronto helped shape comedy for generations.
