1. Know the neighbourhood and rent first before committing
This is so true. KL like actually not “big” big as you say (it is in the Klang valley so the perimeters are bounded by mountains. but it is big enough). When I was buying an apartment here, I basically know the neighbourhood I want (not that there are particularly any “bad” neighbourhoods (may be Chow Kit 🤭) but Bukit Bintang for example is for the young ones where the night life is vibrant, easily accessible but busy as heck 24-7, Damansara/PJ is great for higher end neighbourhoods and international schools but the traffic jam can be challenging if you drive to the city centre daily, another neighbourhood may be great coz it is close to nature etc etc.
2. Which apartment and still, rent first
Yes this one is a great apartment with pool and gym. But your apartment may only have studios so the pool may not have a kiddie section, or the view you want. And what are the gym facilities (the things they have inside) like - are they to your expectation? And again, is it accessible in terms of public transport or you don’t mind driving, how’s the traffic to/from the area? (it would be a blessing if you would normally drive against peak hour traffic flow tho)
Some notes, been commented below, but I still feel the need to clarify.
If an ad says it is “Only for Malays”, it will get viral pretty fast - that is racist. It may be that an apartment is “Only for Muslims”. We are. Muslims that is. When we rent one that is free for all (eg when holidaying - just coz the house is worth it 😅), we would bring our own cutlery and cooking utensils (for example) as some in our family members do not feel comfortable eating from plates and cutleries that may have been used for non-halal foods (meaning pork related) a few days before. (for non-muslims, it is the way these different types of non-halals (eg pork vs non-halal chicken) need to be "ritually" cleansed).
And there are no such things as a “Malay” bank account. Well, I am malay so I guess technically my bank account is owned by a malay. But it is still not a malay bank account. 😂 Remember - Malaysia is the country. Malay is the race. And Islam is the religion.
I guess I need to clarify this Islam and Malay bit, coz it can be confusing to outsiders. But this is from my understanding. Others may disagree or have better understandings. But this is from my POV.
In Malaysia, generally, the (small letter) malays consists of many ethnicities, like orang melayu, jawa, bugis, boyan, batak. If they are Muslims, and practice the Malay culture, constitutionally they are considered as Malay (as a race). We are inclusive that way.
I have a friend, whose mother was ethnically Chinese, but was adoped by a Malay family (this was in the 50’s) and was raised as a Muslim. So was considered Malay. She met an ethnic Indian, fell in love, and the Indian guy converted to Islam and they got married. And have some children (one of them is my friend). I guess you would classified him as a Chindian. But to us, he is a Malay.
From your video, i gather you are American. New Yorker specifically. I cannot and will not find an analogy. Not everybody life perspective conforms to the USA. But Malaysia is inclusive. Why are we even talking about race and ethnicities and religions. Don’t bring that baggage here 😎
Malaysia is definitely one of the places my family and I would love to explore.
