Being a teenager in that arena for this program was truly life changing. The first live sporting event that brought me to tears, solidified my lifelong love for the sport and showed me the power of art/athleticism and being present.
Still makes me sob like a baby. This is a top 3 moment at the U.S. Championships for me in all the years I’ve been watching figure skating. Not just the performance but his reaction to the marks, the crowd going absolutely nuts a full minute before the program ended. The vibes were up up that night. Amazing
It's hard to believe this happened 30 years ago, because watching it makes me feel 12 years old every time. The most magical skate in US Figure Skating Nationals history
In a different upload of this video, a user said that the women hugging him at 7:47 were the mothers of skaters he had been coaching to try to make ends meet... it's been 30 years since this happened and I don't think we've seen something this special since then. It was truly a one of a kind moment.
T-T I've seen this so many times, but whenever I see the thumbnail, I'll watch it again. Every time. Never gets old! <3 Thank you for all the great uploads!
The way me, my mom, and sister were screaming watching this was crazy. We woke up my dad. Later when he watched it (I recorded it.) he said he understood why we were screaming because it was great. 😊
This is not only one of the most iconic moments in figure skating, but in all of sport. It's not just remembered for the brilliant skating, but for someone coming out of major adversity and persevering. I watched Rudy Galindo skate this program live on tv when it originally aired 30 years ago! It still makes me get emotional, and I'm so happy for him, a real natural and rare talent.
Thank you so much for putting these older skating competitions out in the ether. I've been watching figure skating since I was in 5th grade in 1960. My teacher was German and she taught us that Heiss (as in Carol) rhymes with ice. I will never forget that.
He was just wonderfull to see. artiste total.and a very wonderfull technique. Edward Arckless ex Royal Opera Ballet Covent Garden London and conservatoire de Ville de Paris France
