this is a religious rite to be done by all while on a religious  tour but some people does not do out of shyness.   But in order to get the religious merit this rite of religious tonsure is to be done at Kashi, Prayag raj and Haridwar in North India. in south this rite is compulsory at tirupati and Palani usually men and women get tonsured at Palani malai. this is an act of self purification for which one should feel shy or hesitate. There are Sanskrit shlokas that praise the greater merit of this act of tonsure in skanda and Padma Purana. it is considered as most pious act for which dhruda sankalpam is essential.  May the lord Shiva bless you both
