I was working 3rd Shift at the Circle K on exit 5 when this happened. I remember a lot of people being evacuated to the parking lot of the former Gypsy Dixie. Someone told me what had happened and I called my supervisor to ask if I could open the store to let people come in because it was cold outside. I'll never forget that night.

My father was a firefighter in this, he was one in many people to enter the zone. My uncle was in the middle of it too. God blessed us all and they survived🙏🏻

In non signal territory the crew has to fill out a switch report and verify with the train dispatcher the time the switch is returned to mainline position!

I'm going to talk with the FRA this week about an idea that I have that could prevent accidents like this one from happening again. The off going crew of a train would be required to go through their "checklist" before leaving the train. That checklist would cover several items including a physical check of the switch points, hand brakes set, engine shutdown, derails set, and cars not leaking. This would go into the Timetables that each crew has in their possession, and they would be required to go through it with each other with the Conductor reading it aloud to each crew member. Just like a track warrant.

Unfortunately, the best thing would have been for the switch to be interlocked with a signal. This is non-signaled territory, and they should have filled out a switch report and all checked the switch, but those safety rules are only as good as the crew following them.

We actually moved  a week before the train accident  to aiken  im where it derailed  it would have been intro to of our house I tha k God cause we probably would have been dead

For needed context on switch operation, the standard manual switch used in the United States has 4 “signs” that rotate to indicate switch position. On opposing pair was red, and the other opposing pair was green. When the switch, or turnout, is lined for the mainline to hear clearance, the pair facing the crew on the mainline will be the green ones. When the switch is lined for a siding, spur, runaway/derail track, or equipment storage track, the red switch signs will be facing mainline trains. This will illuminate as red in the headlights. In some rail yards, manual switches used to display yellow and white or yellow and green, but as far as I know, all mainline spur switches are colored green and red. Also, at the time, manual switches would not display as an indicator in approaching traffic. Most spur switches were not operated by the dispatcher, and required permission before operating the switch by hand. A lot of mainline switches continue to be operated this way, but in some municipal areas with a lot of spurs, the switches will have an automatic indicator that corresponds with the standard PTC. From what I gather, the Northeastern Corridor owned by Pennsylvania Railroad pioneered the in cab switch indicator system that continue to be used on some railroads decades later. To add, modernization on railroads is a slow and costly process, and it takes disasters to force quick change for technology and SOP’s. It’s also in the hands of each railroad as to how much they intend to modernize and how quickly. The brakeman/conductor who forgot to throw the switch also neglected to notify dispatch, which is usually a requirement before leaving a switch unattended. After operating a switch in either direction, you are, as a railroader, required by law to communicate with the dispatcher when you’re using a switch on any level. Without hearing from the crew about the switch, the dispatcher should’ve never gave them permission to tie down. This was as much a failure on the dispatchers behalf as it was the brakeman. But, no, switches in the US do not display as black or white. The colors are Green for mainline clear and Red for mainline occupied. The switch post rotates when you throw the switch, which moves the signs on the top of the post to indicate the position of the switch to all oncoming traffic.
