Why she had to return 20 years later, destitute, booze addled, mentally unstable, angry and bitter, I don’t know. They destroyed Zoe’s character on her return. Why the hostility towards Kat, when they’d parted on good terms in 2005? Why the whole storyline of her escaping loan sharks, being stalked, giving up and then trying to find her long lost kids, and after finding her children and having the chance to finally be a mother, after all that…to be killed off after falling and hitting her head on bricks?
The most unnecessarily bleak, depressing and tragic ending to any character I can think of on the show. Zoe’s life went to shit as she grew up and became an adult, and she was robbed of the chance to finally find happiness and stability. She was denied at least some semblance of happiness before she died. To have her die alone and in agony, calling for the one person she wanted most…
I can’t remember any other Eastenders character being treated so badly in their final days or even hours alive than Zoe, Ben Wadey made that decision to have Zoe die forsaken and abandoned. And all because he refused Michelle Ryan time off so she could do some more filming duties for her upcoming short film…
If only it could’ve ended in the train station in 2005. Zoe’s legacy would still be intact, Michelle Ryan’s reputation wouldn’t have been tarnished (a lot of people think she’s a crap actress because of her performance on her return)…and Kat would still have the one good thing to come out of what Uncle Harry did to her. Instead, everyone has lost out. Kat, Zoe, the Slaters, fans of the show, Michelle Ryan…no one has come out of this return and Zoe’s death looking good.
What an absolute fucking waste.
