I love these houseplants, but I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. Here is why they might not be right for your home.
Managing a collection means knowing which species are worth the extra effort. I am walking through a few favorites that are beautiful but come with some unique challenges, whether they are too large, messy, or just require more space than most people expect.
If you are looking to improve your plant care routine, it helps to understand the reality behind the aesthetics. I talk about why certain fast-growing plants can quickly take over a room and offer some honest insight to help you make better decisions for your own indoor gardening setup.

Also agree with Calatheas but I will say, C. rufibarba was an exception for me! I found it super easy and a lot more tolerant of benign neglect and less-than-perfect humidity conditions than all the other Calatheas I've had.
Finally, Peperomia! I really tried to love them and had so many varieties at one point, but they all turned on me eventually, even the ones that seemed like they were doing great for a while. I just find them really delicate and unpredictable and not for me. I need a sturdy plant!
Loving my different Hoyas but I’m eradicating mealy bugs at the moment 😑 had to toss out a few that were too damaged
As for Decursiva, i finally realized that it likes to crawl, like a ground cover. So i have mine in a large oblong metal planter where the main stem can lay along the soil and establish roots at each node, and it is one happy camper! The interstitial spaces are so much shorter, leaves are huge with lots of "fingers", and it sends out far fewer runners. The only problem is that it is now huge!!!
- Cissus discolor: It's fast-growing, super thirsty, and quite dramatic when watering is not consistent.
- Queen Anthurium: I think I don’t need to explain why this one is on my list LOL (any other anthuriums are okay for me)
- Any wall-mounted Platycerium: They’re difficult to keep up with in terms of watering and require a lot of light.
- Calatheas: I just can’t handle their demands!
- Interestingly, some cacti: I worry about overwatering them. Since they often don’t show signs of needing water and I have many plants to care for, I might go months without watering them, which stunts their growth, or I sometimes underwater them too much, so they suffer from dry rot! It sounds crazy to struggle with cacti when I can manage more finicky plants, but that’s my experience! :-D
