Love it found exact same one will be here Tues!!!!!!  Did find a sheet magnet so I can do it in one chunk !!!!    Thanks for this build idea saved me a butt ton of money I can now spend on rocks!!!

I bought a potter's wheel a few years ago, to do just this. Never got around to converting it. Need to liquidate my lapidary stuff and make room for a few select pieces of equipment. :)

If you happen to do both pottery and lapidary, you can place a thin sheet of steel on the bottom of your MDF bats to make them stick to the magnets and then you can use it for both purposes!

After watching your video i made this exact same flat lap the exact same way. I get great results from it and im more than happy.. cheers Mike. Love watching your stuff very informative keep up the good work buddy.

It is great to see this video. I made a flat lap using the exact same potters wheel you have here, but with 7” diameter Velcro backed diamond sanding discs (couldn’t find any larger ones) they are sold as a set of 7 on amazon and go from 50 grit up to 3000. I attached Velcro in the same way you attached the magnet strips to the wheel. I have been using it most weekends for the last two years and get great results, but this week it suddenly stopped working. I think it is the control board and I can’t get a replacement from the manufacturer, so I thought now is the time to buy a real flat lap. And then I realized why I DIY’d it in the first place. They are still so ridiculously expensive!
So I’ve decided to try fitting it with a new motor.
For anyone else thinking about doing this, the slower RPM of the potters wheel was no problem at all. I guess it must take longer than a faster flat lap but I find it fast enough.
I get rid of the water by having a couple of rolled up flannels at the far edge, soaking up the water, and I wring them out into a bucket every ten minutes or so. Then use paper towels to clean up the sludge - it’s really a quick clean up.

An interesting shortcut on the adhesive magnet: buy a pre-cut circular 3d printer adhesive magnet sheet just a hair smaller than the platten. For the first one I made (I seized the bearing on the first wheel from water overflow), I used a big square piece then cut it down to size. To find the right size it'll probably be listed as a millimeter value rather than in inches.

I've been using a flat lap like this for taking heavy damage out of woodworking tools (plane blades and chisels especially). It's also much faster than a tormek style (10" wet grinder) machine so I can (with a steady hand) do the first coarse sharpening step in a fraction of the time, while still staying water cooled.

Also, for my first one, I got a big thick sheet of adhesive magnet (like 3-4mm thick) but the second one I got is only 1.5mm thick and holds onto the 12" plates just fine. No need to get a particularly thick adhesive sheet.

Do you know what the pull force of your magnet tape is?

I find that flat laps by Uxcell with no center hole are a bit heavier and flatter and about the same price. No wobbling hole to distract you either.

If it turns it will work

This is brilliant, I am.just getting started in this lapidary lark and I'm going to 100% copy this, thank you very much😊

Just don't try to polish hematite on it, lol.
Great idea... I'm picking one up in about a week

I followed suit pickup a pottery wheel converted it and started  grinding, It works but only spins at 320 RPM which is slow

Amazing! I've seen so many videos of homemade lap equipment that are way beyond my creative abilities. I'm confident I could make this! Thanks so much for sharing this

Thanks for the video. We have that exact pottery wheel! 😊

Of course, this video is suggested right after i sold this exact pottery wheel!! I'll have to keep an eye out now to undo my mistake.

Hi Mike,  I love it when your brain cells go into overdrive!  Some ideas that might help - used medical 2 liter IV bags make great drip systems.  Take a metal coat hanger & wrap it around the drip hose to get the hose where you need it.  The magnetic tape is an awesome idea!  I'll have to add pottery wheels to my 'watch for' estate sale list!  Great video!  Thumbs up!    Jim

Got to love garage sale finds. And congrats to Danielle!

Funny, the drip system link on Amazon says it is an enema kit.
